The best on the subject by far,

This review is from: Karmapa: The Black Hat Lama of Tibet (Hardcover)
Produced with the cooperation of the 16th Karmapa, with complete access to the Rumtek treasury in which are stored the 200 yak-loads of treasures brought with the Karmapa from Tsurphu in 1959, this is the book to own if you are interested in the most important tulku lineages of the Karma Kagyu. As well as biographies of the first 16 Karmapas, there are also extensive biographies of the Shamar, Situ, Pawo, Kongtrul, and other major lineages. As well, there are photographs with helpful descriptions of many of the inexpressibly precious artifacts associated with the Karmapas in history. This book is worth every penny of whatever the market will bear, and more. An invaluable reference work on the subject.
