I had the great pleasure of seeing Kartik Seshadri in concert a couple weeks ago. It was there that I had a chance to purchase a copy of this CD. It almost goes without saying that a CD cannot capture fully the live performance, and it is no surprise that this is the case with this CD. Kartik Seshadri was a student of Ravi Shankar, and for the most part plays traditional sitar music.

This CD consists of two Ragas. The first is "Raga Kaushi Kanada", performed in the senia-beenkar style: alap, jod and jhala. This is a solo sitar performance which was recorded at the Finney Chapel in Oberlin, Ohio. It is a beautiful piece, but it lacks the diversity of the other pieces which I have heard him play, and that of the second piece on this album. It also lacks the energy of a live performance, but perhaps those who know the sitar better than I would feel differently.

The second piece is "Raga Mishra Gara" which is performed in the thumri style. This track was performed live at the Neurosciences Auditorium in La Jolla, California. With Anindo Chatterjee on Tabla this is much more along the lines of the performance which I heard live. A piece which has diverse sections, including those which leave one amazed by Kartik Seshadri's skill and musicianship. Anindo Chatterjee delivers a very good performance as well, though I cannot say that he is on the same level as Kartik.

This is a very good CD, and one which I would recommend to those who appreciate classical Indian music.
