5.0 out of 5 stars "Some People Have Invisible Ties", September 22, 2007
This review is from: Kasbah (DVD)
Note: Spanish with Engish subtitles.

'Kasbah' is a gem of a movie that takes the viewer on a perilous road trip as Mario (Ernesto Alterio), a Spanish businessman living in Morrocco searches for his visiting half-sister who has persumably been kidnapped while shopping in the Kasbah. As he drives across the desert from village to village he encounters an array of residents willing to both help and hinder him in his attempted rescue effort. Along the way he is joined by the lovely Alix (Natalia Verbeke), fellow Spaniard and tourist who aids him in his quest.

This film will catch your interest from the very beginning and maintain that focus and interest until the closing credits. The plot is exciting, the acting excellent, the landscape and settings hypnotic and the Morroccan, African soundtrack exquisite. This is a film that will stand up well to repeat viewings, the ultimate compliment for any film.

My Rating: -5 Stars-.

Morocco is the setting for this outstanding film about Laura, a Spanish girl's disappearance without a trace. It is filled with suspense from the very beginning and there is no hint throughout what might have happened to her.

Caught innocently in the mystery web of her disappearance is Mario Salas, the manager in charge of a local business. Mario is about to leave Morocco and return to Spain, when Laura disappears. He had escorted her to the "Kasbah" (crowded market filled with stalls and frightening alleys). He briefly looks away and in that split instant she vanishes. Police authorities and Laura's parents are convinced he is behind some sort of scam. Mario and Laura are half siblings, and their shared father believes Mario is after revenge.

The story follows Mario's quest to find Laura and restore his own honor. Anxious to cash in on any reward monies, Mario is bedeviled by greedy, unscrupulous crooks, thieves and murderers. His innocence is reminiscent of Voltaire's "Candide".

The Moroccan dessert background is hypnotizing, the music exotic and the direction first class. Highly recommended.
