This review is from: Kasebrot (Audio CD)
Helge Schneider is a German musican vaguely in the 'Kabarett' tradition--he gives little speeches, tells stories, and sings songs, all of which, however, express his strangely endearing bizarreness. He seems to have somewhat absorbed or merged with his own 'persona' over the years--a somewhat nasal figure who plays with (the German) language as he does with musical instruments. His topics range from trivial to obscene, but even at his most obscene, it's hard to become offended, due to his oddly sympathetic and open character (though the 'Käsebrot' material is pretty much all at the trivial end of the spectrum: he does claim that cheese sandwiches are "super sexy" but does not elaborate). A cult figure for many years, he became more well-known among his fellow German speakers when one of his little songs, the 'kitty litter' song ("Katzeklo") became widely popular in an almost 'viral' way. This CD includes not just Helge's "Käsebrot" (cheese sandwich) song and related sound recordings, but also a number of short video clips (.flv files), the menu for which opens automatically when you place the CD in a computer. Among these videos, my favorite is the "2 Käsebröter" video, where Helge sings the song in a different, 'crooner'-ish, smarmy fashion, after explaining how he has become filthy rich from his cheese sandwich song, but wouldn't want to disappoint his fans. Do be warned: generally, people either love or hate his work. Also: do be warned that almost everything on this CD is in German--and it's Helge's distinctively muffled, idiosyncratic German, too!
