Wow , I never thought reviewing a manga could be so tough. I've been sitting here trying to think of the words that might alleviate some notions as to what this story is about or alienate anyone from reading this great story. First let me say that what I look for in an anime or manga first and foremost is the story ,whether its slice of life , action , romance or comedy.
I should also note that being from a western culture there are big differences in the way Japan and the west as to how males portray women. I grew up watching Benny Hill, Bosom Buddies , White Chicks and the like and truthfully they aren't very endearing towards women. Whereas anime and manga have a way of showcasing the nuances of females without being derogatory , shows like Otoboku , Strawberry Eggs , Princess Princess and of course Kashimashi come to mind.
Okay on to my review.
Kashimashi is the story of Hazumu , an effeminate boy who is killed by an alien spaceship with engine trouble , only to be resurrected as a girl . Hazumu now has to go on with life now as a girl . With help from tomboyish Tomari , his only male friend Asuta and Yasuna a girl he had a crush on , who had rebuffed him but is now drawn to him. There are more characters like Hitoshi the alien observer /now teacher keeping track of Hazumu's progress ,Ayuki another female friend whose observations on human nature bely her youth and the silly Jan Puu the human embodiment of the spaceship that crushed Hazumu.
This was a very entertaining book and I became so engrossed with it that I flew right through it. The pacing of the story and the development of the main characters had a nice flow, I never once wanted to skip ahead from boredom. There are plenty of comic moments and lots of emotional parts. The artwork is top notch and you can really feel the emotions in the girls faces.
I don't want to give away too much but if you want a good story then Kashimashi omnibus vol.1 just might fit the bill. I guess I should add this warning , there are a couple of scenes of the girls kissing , personally I'm not uptight about that and if I were I'd miss out on this great tale. So pick it up I bet you'll like it.

The story is just adorable. While the art seems a little 7 out of 10 in the beginning you truly get to know the characters and fall in love with them in a way that makes you fall in love with the artists style along with them. It's interesting, and ideas about gender identity get touched upon here and there which make you think about what it is to be male or female, as well as of course entertains you with a theme that's pretty different.

It's worth it. The story will stay with you. It's nice.

From the frst time I read it I fell in love with this story. I had a little trouble with the "alien" theme, but once you focus on the stories behind the characters that detail quicly becomes insignificant to the story.

this book is great i once read this on a manga site and just loved it and had to buy it with it's story and depth it's a worthwhile book and record mend getting it for anyone.
