About the Author

Urmilla Deshpande lives in Tallahassee, a place of swamps and Spanish moss, a writer s paradise. This is her second work of fiction, and, having discovered the writer in herself late in life, she has no time to lose. She is working on her third novel, and a book of short fiction. Although she writes for herself, she loves nothing more than when the book is published and then belongs to every reader, to experience and interpret as they please.

On a trip to India earlier this month, I read first "A Pack of Lies" and then Kashmir Blues, both by Urmilla Deshpande. Although I read voraciously, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review for a book I've purchased on Amazon. I was just so impressed with Ms. Deshpande's writing that I want other to share the experience.

Of the two books, the first ("A Pack of Lies') is better, I think, but the second is also really wonderful. The writing is so confident, and the worlds (both interior and exterior) the author evokes are utterly convincing. I wish I had Ms. Deshpande by my side for my first trip to Mumbai; her descriptions of daily life really changed the way I observed the city and it would have been amazing to have her guidance, since most of the time I did not know what I was looking at. The first book, however, is a deep exploration of the actions and motivations of a young Indian woman, and the second more of a suspense story. In both cases, however, the real protagonist is India itself, in all its messy chaotic fecundity, its glorious landscapes and cities, its grandiose history.

Thoroughly enjoyable reading, and I found my mind wandering back many times over the past few weeks to the experiences and reactions of the narrator of A Pack of Lies.

I chose "Kashmir Blues" for my book club to read because I had read "A Pack of Lies" by the author and enjoyed it. Also, I know the author and hoped I could talk her into attending a meeting of the book club and discussing her novel with us. Everyone loved the book, but the interesting thing was how the book was something a little different to each of us. On all levels it was an interesting, suspenseful novel, containing love triangles, beautiful descriptions, travel, violence, drugs, addiction, sapphires, kidnapping, history, and most of all, a fascinating setting in India. Each of us seemed to have insights into the characters in unique ways, and Urmilla would sometimes confirm a viewpoint, and at other times leave it to our own interpretations. Unlike what I remember from "what did the author mean here" discussions in high school, this author confirmed that we were all right! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
