4.0 out of 5 stars A good bag, but I expected more..., May 20, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kata PB-48 Medium GDC Camera Bag for large DSLR camera or Handycam. (Electronics)
Here comes my critical review of the Kata PB-48 bag.

I am convinced that none of the products is free of "bugs", it is just the quantity [of them], which translates into quality and makes people happy or frustrated.

I was making a choice between this bag and a Lowepro Nova 3, which are nearly the same in size and in price. However, the Kata PB-48 is slightly larger, and this was the qualifier to pull the trigger.
This bag is just fine for my DSLR with 16-50 f/2.8 and 50-135 f/2.8 lenses plus a flash. Although the same gear may fit in Nova 3, it will be much more tight.

In general the bag is good, but it is not up to the standards I expected for this price.

Here are a few things which I am not happy with:

1. This bag is not really very well thought through. It is not flexible enough: there are only two dividers in the main compartment. This is definately not sufficient considering the bag's volume. I expected the smaller compartments to be split in two as well. Unlike the Lowepro Nova bags, the Kata dividers will not allow you to attach any additional Velcro dividers without modifying the first, as they are just flat Nylon.

2. Quality of the materials used is below my expectations and the overal "built quality" is lower than offered by the competition. It is especially true for the bag's strap, which looks quite cheap.

3. The strap does not hold well the adjusted length.

4. The "Turtle Ninja"-like front compartment is fine only until you start filling it in. Then it deforms and the compartment becomes difficult to open (well, actually it is not easy to open it when it is empty too). I would also prefer a zipper with two sliders on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good camera bag if you have an SLR and a few accessories, December 8, 2007
This review is from: Kata PB-48 Medium GDC Camera Bag for large DSLR camera or Handycam. (Electronics)
I am very happy with this bag. The construction is very good, it is well-padded, and it has enough mesh pouches and compartments to be sufficient. It also came with a water-proof cover.

If you have an SLR body, 2 lenses, a flash or some other accessory, then this bag will fit them nicely. Anything more, it might be a stretch.

But if all you have is an SLR body with 1 lens, and you never plan to expand, this will be an overkill. My wife would not touch this bag due its size. Even for me, as an starting enthusiast, if I don't pick up photography big-time, then I will not find the motivation to carry around this bag.

I like the padded interior, which is divided into three adjustable compartments. The bag is designed for an SLR or DSLR, standard size cameras with interchangeable lenses. One possible drawback is that it has only three compartrments, but this is enough for my Sony DSLR with lens attached and space for two additional lenses and maybe some cleaning equipment. There are also zippered pockets strategically located for maybe a camera manual, memory cards, etc.

What I dislike about the camera bag is how difficult is is to open the top cover. The top has, for perhaps protection from duat and moisture, a 1 1/2 inch continuous lip around it that zippers the top closed. This lip is hard to hold up with one hand while I access the plastic snap that also holds the top closed. Since the lip wants to remain in place, even though I am holding it up, I have to insert my fingers under the lip to reach the plastic snap. It's difficult to hold the bag, hold up the lip, and reach under the lip to get to the plastic snap. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think so.

The bag has a shoulder strap and plastic cover that can be used to protect the bag and its contents from rain or snow.
