Ok, before you jump in and buy this unit for $250 or more used, or $1000 or more, new, you need to understand - this device, while approved by the Navy and Coast Guard for sea water desalination aboard life rafts, is NOT what you want for continued coastal survival.

This is designed for life-raft-one-time-use. PERIOD. The owners manual from Katadyn says so. Each time it is used, you have to prep and clean the membrane from all biologicals that may be on it, you have to keep the membrane serviced thereafter. Once a year, it has to be factory inspected and serviced. Letting the membrane dry out will ruin the unit, etc. This is HIGH MAINTENANCE for a simple manual-pump reverse osmosis hydraulic pump with a salt membrane in it. If you aren't on a life raft, then you DON'T need this unit. What you most-likely would benefit far more from is a traditional RO filter system, maybe even a home system with a salt filter added and an AC/DC inverter to power it.

Of course, a MUCH CHEAPER solution that requires almost NO MAINTENANCE afterward, is a distiller, which will pull ALL SALT out of your source water, and coincidentally boil the water killing all microbes, simultaneously while you desalinate. All that, for less than $100 in parts, new.

I have used on of these as a training test in the military. They do work, they are fine for what they are designed for, but buying one for a bugout use is insane. Now, if you are a Tarpon fisherman in Florida, and going out into open water on a larger vessel, then sure, you know you need this anyhow. I rate this 3-stars because the instructions are missing explaining most of this, there is no validation or certification that the membrane is still intact (this is listed as a USED unit), and there is no reference to the last factory service on the unit - WHICH IS REQUIRED BY KATADYN once used, on a yearly basis.

[Good]

Katadyn is a good brand that people can trust. This product is no exception, since this product and its bigger cousin the Katadyn Survivor 35 Desalinator are standard in most life rafts. If you're looking to make salt water drinkable, you need this product.

It is portable. As an alternative, most solar sills to my knowledge are not portable.

[Bad]

Maintenance: Whether or not you use this, you will have to maintain it with some special fluid (or powder - I'm not sure yet since I haven't opened the package). If you don't do this, this product will either not work or as well, or not at all. Moreover if after you use it, you think there will be some time before it's used again, you have to flush out all the salt in order to keep it working well. For some really strange reason, Amazon does not sell these products. (Yes you probably need multiple types of cleaners.) If you buy these cleaners, you might as well buy them directly from the Katadyn since all the retailers that sell this product do not sell it below the retail price.

There are more points to know related to maintenance. If you want to know what they are, I believe Katadyn has the manual for it online on their website. If you buy this product, YOU WILL NEED TO READ THE MANUAL, then again that's probably the case for virtually any real water filter.

I tested one once drinking the water after desalinating ocean water. Works fine by my test, but also by many tests from the Coast Guard and Navy, etc.

This is the device for lifeboat survival for 1-2 people. Probably would work fine for a larger number, and the advertising copy does mention 6 or even 8 people in various places. Though it's expensive, drinking water is the big limiting factor in lifeboat survival...
