The filter is removeable (same filter as in the katadyn microfilter) so yes, you should be able to just replace the it without tossing the whole shebang.
According to Katadyn's website it will filter out lightly turbid (non clear) water, reduce chemicals in the water (activated charcoal in filter). Not sure about the heavy metals though. it uses the .3 micron filter. the website is (http://www.katadyn.com/fileadmin/user_upload/katadyn_products/Downloads/Selection_Card_Filter_Technology_Comparison_EN.pdf) that shows what uses it is good for.
Even if not REQUIRED, is it OK to use water treatment (prob. chlorine dioxide) or will that cause harm to filter? Nov 2, 2012
The real question is why would you want to use water pills? They are toxic. Even the Army has a limit on how many anyone can use. But yes it will jack up the filter and hold that taste inside it.
