Is it to late to review this :-)
I have used mine now for 4 years, and it is still working good.
It is small and slow, and ample for one person , or one per person.
it was a very lightweight model, when dryed out after use it is about 10oz.

bought it because with ceramic filters I can field clean it in the stream pond or lakes.
I added a small foam pre-filter, because of the places where water is available in the summer in california, the water is not in geat abundance.
In high algie waters the filter will turn green on the outside, and begin to slow down.
I carefully clean it off after filling my water bag, and it will go again with the same filter over and over.

The filter is of the 2-3 micron variety, so it gets everything out but the smallest of bugs (meaning virus stuff I dont understand) , with unsure waters I also use a small chemical tab, which I put in before the filter, so it hits the filter too, while diffusing throughout the water.

It can take some time to do a full 2liter type of fill when kneeled over or bent over some water source, but because i dont have to carry another 6 more ounces (or whatever the next one is) it doesnt bother me.

After filling i usually work all the water out of the pump and filter system, so it weighs less, when i get home i make sure to completly dry the filter.
the cermic of the filter can (in so much) be ground off the outside of it, when your cleaning it, to re-open the holes (so to speak) , but with great care, I have maintained the filter well enough that i have not needed a replacement yet, nor will for a long time.

What else to say?

If you can find a source of fresh water -- even if it's a 'funny' color -- with a good backpacking filter, you can get all the water you need. The KMCM can filter up to 1,850 gallons of questionable water, weighs in at a mere 8 ozs and can fit in a back or cargo pocket. It will take about a minute of pumping to fill a .5 liter bottle or two minutes to fill a quart canteen. Although the intake tubing fits neatly into the bottom of the pump housing, the discharge line does not. Thus, even for a short trip or day hike you'll need to bring the (supplied) nylon carrying case. Not supplied and noticeably absent is a means to clip the output hose to a bottle. It takes two hands to operate the pump ... so there is no hand left to guide the tube into the bottle. You might want to try rigging something up with a stainless steel paper clip or bankers clip.

Works well and is very compact/light. It is slower pumping but manageable. Very good for solo use but not as a group purifier.

It's a Katadyn, which means it is very solid, reliable, and works as advertised. It even includes some little features I wouldn't have thought about, like the float to keep the input on the surface of the water, rather than in the mud. Very nice product for the use of one person, maybe two. Get the bigger unit for a family or really hot weather hiking.

I bought a smaller version of Katadyn back in 1996. I used it when hiking streams, and one time I used it in a duck pond, at Gray Lodge, near the Sutter Buttes. I pumped water from a duck pond at a natural reserve for ducks, and pumped water into a cup and drank it. Two weeks later all ducks in that pond died from botulism. I did not get sick at all. Now, I did not know that botulism existed in that water, I trusted the Katadyn and it tasted good, and was purified by the katadyn. I do not recommend people takig water form a duck pond, but it worked that afternoon.

Pretty awesome water filter. It does take some muscle if you are going to fill up more than 1 ltr bottle. I took this intending to supply water for me and 2 others, but it really is better for solo hiking. Your arms will get tired. I still love it though. Also, upon arriving home and cleaning the filter, it definitely did it's job. It had sediment all over it, but cleaned up in seconds with the supplied 3M scrub pad. Overall, I like this filter alot and would recommend it for solo hikers (unless you go hiking with John Cena, then just make him pump it).
