Book Description

0974167762 978-0974167763 July 24, 2009 Sixth Edition
This is the "bible" of guide books regarding Baxter State Park and Katahdin. It is in its Sixth Edition and is constantly being updated. The last was in the summer of 2009.

The book is 268 pages of the most comprehensive information base about the Park. Baxter Park was first established in the 1930's as a wilderness park by donations from the former Governer of Maine and philanthropist, Percival P Baxter. It now has grown to over 209,000 acres of prime mountain wilderness, located in Northern Maine.

The guide book contains sections on Park history, Indian leagons, Indian place names, geology, birds and animals in the Park, where to see moose, campgrounds, backcountry campsites, streams and ponds in the Park and of course, the 226 mile trail system that reaches the peaks and ponds. It also tells the traveler how to book reservations, which you will need if coming to the Park during peak season in July and August. BOOK SPECS

Review

"A necessaty for the hiker at Baxter Park." -- Bangor Dailey News<br /><br />"The map alone is worth the price. worth the price." --Portland Sunday Telegram

From the Publisher

This is the new fifth edition as of summer of 2003. It includes all trail changes and current camping information. The book is sized to easily to be included in your pack pockets. The map is the most widely used by hikers and campers in the Park because of its 15 minute format (one inch to the mile) and its color scheme. The fact it is up to date renders the guide as being the best information source for the Park.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best sIngle guide to hiking in Baxter State Park, May 3, 1998
This is an excellent hiking guide to Baxter State Park. It includes history and background of the park as well as a comprehensive guide to all the trails and peaks. It also comes with the best pocket map to the park. I only wish Mr. Clark had included a little more commentary and personality (some sneaks in). He is obviously a passionate expert and a little more depth would be welcome even though this is essentially a trail guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book on Baxter, April 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Katahdin: A Guide to Baxter Park & Katahdin (Paperback)
Decent book, gives some good info about the history of the park. You can get most of the info from the Baxter park website (about how to make reservations, etc) but it gives detailed descriptions of the campgrounds and really good trail guides. The included map was not all that great, so I ended up buying a larger one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Previous review inaccurate, July 11, 2006
This review is from: Katahdin: A Guide to Baxter Park & Katahdin (Paperback)
The current book has no maps, only written mileage and commentary on the trails. the older review must of been earlier printing. You would be better off buying the Maps by DeLorme or Jim Witherell available at most grocery stores up here. I have a 1969 edition of the Katahdin section of the Appalachian Trail edited byJean Stephenson that is more useful than this current book for the hiker/camper.
