3.0 out of 5 stars The Pampered Packer, January 7, 2003
This review is from: Katahdin With Love - An Inspirational Journey (Hardcover)
I decided to read this book based on the jacket summary (after the tragic death of their son, a couple hikes the Appalachian Trail). However, their son was barely mentioned and their reason for hiking the trail seemed to be "life is too short." That reason is so ... vague, that it didn't give me a feeling of wanting to know them or even cheer for them.

Regarding their hiking the AT, the author was so pampered, it's laughable (her husband planned, packed, navigated, cooked, shopped and cleaned for her during the whole six months). She would sit and wait while he searched for water, hung food bags and set up camp. Each morning while she snuggled in her sleeping bag, he would serve her coffee. Geesh. Also, since she mentions it so many times, you find that she is overly concerned about not having freshly shampooed hair. ???

This book is a very sweet and light love story and an easy read (written in daily journal format). The author greatly appreciates nature and has a true love of God. However, this is not the book to read if you are trying to deal with the loss of a loved one or trying to find out what daily trail life is like.
