Book Description

"What can I say about this book but WOW! ... If you are a lover of the fantasy genre then you will become an instant fan of Sam Medina." - The Kindle Book Review

If you love epic fantasy like The Lord of the Rings, you'll love The Fetters of Wizardry, a new fantasy series about magic, technology, and saucy dragons.

BOOK ONE: KATARINA THE DRAGONSLAYER AND THE FOEBREAKER'S CURSE

Living in a world scarred by an ancient conflict between magic and technology, Katarina is a half-elven slave girl determined to find freedom and adventure. When she takes a pair of ancient swords from a cave, she is blamed for her master's death. Her frantic attempt to escape torture and death at the hands of a vengeful mob forces her to risk the nameless terrors of the King's Road, which is said to have been cursed because of a Foebreaker, a living machine of war that laid waste to the Southlands long ago.

I actually purchased this on a whim and over the last week I've really enjoyed the reading it. I'm not going to say this is the next great series, or that I've found the new Fred Saberhagen, but I will say that the story shows great promise and I hope that the author follows up with the second book.

I do need to give the author credit for coming up with a very new take on how magic works and how it is based. By far the most original idea I've seen in a fantasy book in years. The biggest praise I can give is that the book was fun to read. I'm not breaking down the story, you can get the idea behind it from the authors description, but the characters are well rounded, there are little touches inside the story that fill in the background nicely, and while it's not all swinging swords and casting spells, the story moves along well enough that you don't feel like you're wasting time reading it.

The only thing that actually bothered me about the book is pretty fixable. I will also freely admit that I am seriously OCD on this. There are too many spots where there are missing quotations marks and where words are missing spaces between them. Yes I'm being picky, and no, it didn't stop me from enjoying the book, but it happened often enough that it caught my eye.

That being said, do NOT let that keep you from buying the book. It not only shows real promise for a good series, it is very entertaining. I'm just waiting on word for book two. :) Keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy...It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This September 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What can I say about this book but WOW! I was immensely impressed with this fantastic story and I do not read a lot of fantasy. This book reminded me of LOTR or Narnia. If you are a lover of the fantasy genre then you will become an instant fan of Sam Medina.

This is Katarina's coming of age-finding herself and finding out who she is meant to be- story. She is a young ˝ elfin girl who, at the beginning of the book, is sold into slavery. She just knows that she is destined for greater things than being a lowly slave to a worm farmer. Even though she is young and small in size, she is feisty and brave with an overabundance of curiosity. One day while out exploring she finds a cave. Inside she stumbles on a small fortune that will allow her to buy her freedom and a pair of swords, swords that somehow speaks to her inner self; powerful swords, swords that will lead her to her destiny. She takes this entire find home with her and almost immediately she and her owner are attacked by a dragon, a dragon that clearly has something wrong with it. With the help of these swords she is able to kill this dragon but in doing so the townspeople accuse her of being a witch and she flees, flees for her life. The following day she meets Oren, a powerful elf of legend and learns that she has an important role to play in the coming events in her world. He agrees to take her on as an apprentice as he knows with his help she'll become a legend for their people and learns that she has an important role to play in the coming events of her world. Along the way she meets and gets help defeating the all-powerful sun dragon El-Nasser, from an ogre named Wendel, a couple of dragons...Dalandra and Gaminol, plus a few other colorful characters. By the time the final page is turned you will get a glimpse of Katarina's future and who she is destined to become.

Samuel Medina is a very talented writer. Fantasy genre books similar to this one is not something I normally read so I have to say that "Katarina the Dragonslayer and the Foebreaker's Curse" was written so well that I had a hard time putting it down and found myself reading WAY past my bedtime. If you enjoyed reading the "Lord of the Rings" series or the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, then this book needs to be on your bookshelf or Kindle shelf. It is one great story and Mr. Medina is a gifted storyteller. 5-stars without a doubt!!!

I love reading books that are easy to read, captivating, and entertaining. Katarina is all three. A good journey away from this reality into a world that is imaginative and believable, in a fantasy sort of way.

More About the Author

In a quiet neighborhood of Jersey City, New Jersey, a little boy got so fed up with his siblings that he refused to play with them and instead began to write stories. As he grew older, he leaned most heavily toward fantasy and science fiction, having been influenced perhaps too much by Robert E. Howard and J.R.R. Tolkien.

With the passage of time, he lost his way and ended up studying at Princeton before going on to serve in the US Marine Corps and then spending a few years working as a stockbroker. Eventually, he returned to writing, and now lives in the shadowy underworld of Toronto, where he works as an artist and is presently writing an epic fantasy series about an ancient struggle between magic and technology.

Sam Medina is a First Nations artist and and writer with a passion for ancient cultures, particularly those of the Incas, Mayans, and every culture that has worked wonders in stone.
