Grade 3–4—When her beloved 12-year-old collie dies, Aleta's two best friends and her parents do their best to help her come to terms with her loss. The story does a good job of showing how the child navigates the various stages of grief, including denial, anger, depression, and, finally, acceptance. She eventually finds relief from her strong emotions in her own time and with help from an older family friend, Uncle Jimmy. Good suggestions on how to cope are offered: talk about your feelings, understand that people grieve in different ways, and create a scrapbook that will be a happy reminder of the deceased. Unremarkable illustrations follow the story line but don't add much interest, and the characters' faces are different from picture to picture. A friend with two kids recently lost their family dog of 13 yrs. She didn't know how to comfort her kids and was actually a little uncomfortable about what to say. This was their first family loss. I had the book, "Kate, the Ghost Dog" for my own family and purchased one for her. It's a book about coping with the loss of a pet. It highlights the little girl "Aleta" and her relationship with her family, friends and the people closest to her. They're there with all their love and support to help her understand her feelings and what to do with them. You can read this to, with your kids, or let them read it on their own. It will surprise you that it also works for adults. It did for me. Most of us have childhood memories about our first time loss of a pet. It's a great book to have on hand for your own family, and keep a couple to give away. Anyone that is a pet owner will need this wonderful story.
