5.0 out of 5 stars A very good biography of a saint-to-be, May 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Kateri Tekakwitha, Mystic of the Wilderness (Paperback)
This book tells the fascinating and inspiring story of Kateri Tekakwitha, the 17th century woman who is now know as the Lily of the Mohawks.

Orphaned and disfigured by smallpox, Kateri converted to Christianity and died a holy death at a Jesuit mission village near Montreal. Beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, she is honored at shrines in New York State and Canada. She is one miracle away from sainthood.

This is one of the most recent and best of the numerous books which have been written about this sweet saint-to-be. It is second only to Ellen Walworth's out-of-print work. The author has done an excellent job of telling Kateri's beautiful story in its true setting.

It's a must-read for those who are new to Blessed Kateri and for old friends.

Good book, easy to read. Insightful into the history and cultural effect that the eastern Americans and the European explorers had on each other. I would have liked a bit more if it contained the reasons for Kateri's importance in the Church.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blessed Kateri's quiet way to holiness and faith, August 22, 2010

This review is from: Kateri Tekakwitha, Mystic of the Wilderness (Paperback)
This is a beautiful story about an important Native American woman who soon will be a saint. Kateri Tekakwitha lived in the 17th Century but her influence spans the centuries and she continues to intercede for the faithful. The book provides the details of Kateri's life against the background of the developing culture of Native Americans and the advent of American Catholicism as introduced by French Jesuit priests. Through her quiet, simple faith, Kateri led her own people to holiness and provides an example of holiness today.
