Kath and Kim is by far the best Australian comedy of the last 10 years. While it may take an australian humour to understand some of it, it overall will please anybody looking for great entertainment.
Filmed around Melbourne, Kath and Kim focusses on a mother and daughter who think they are the coolest people in town, but they simply are not. Their day to day antics are extremely funny, and the clothes they wear are just putrid. The cast also includes many other funny characters and often there are guest stars such as Barry Humphries, Geoffrey Rush, RAchel Griffiths and Kylie Minogue. This TV series has now run for three seasons. All of them are brilliant. They also filmed a TV movie in time for December 2005. While the series may be difficult to find on DVD in USA, I would recommend checking out the Aussie site www.ezydvd.com.au. Overall, a TV series which is worth every single penny. Even the poms love it.

A hilarious TV sitcom was introduced in Australia in 2002 entitled "Kath & Kim". Created by Magda Szubanski, who plays the character Sharon Karen Strzelecki, the three seasons (24 episodes) thus far of "Kath & Kim" revolve around the lives of a mother, Kathleen 'Kath' Darleen Day Knight (Jane Turner), and her daughter Kimberly 'Kim' Day Craig (Gina Riley). Kim, who is generally rather obnoxious and rude to one & all, including her henpecked husband Brett Craig (Peter Rowsthorn) and her "second-best friend" Sharon, sees herself as being extremely attractive & sophisticated, but in reality, can rarely squeeze herself into the hideously unfashionable clothing that she usually wears. She often fights with Brett, who supports Kim through his salesman job at an electronics store located at the "Fountain Lakes Mall", where Kath, Kim and Sharon often spend much time shopping. Sharon, who is usually seen with a rash or a minor sports-related injury, has difficulty finding a stable boyfriend and can't let go of the ever-abusive Kim. Kel Graham Knight (Glenn Robbins), who marries Kath at the end of the first season, also works at the mall: at a butcher shop. Having been left at the alter four times in a row, Kel has self-esteem issues; but loves Kath dearly; even when he finds out in the second season that Kath's first husband (Gary Poole, played by Mick Molloy) never actually divorced Kath. After this fiasco is solved, Kim, trusting in her crooked father Gary in spite of Kath's warnings, gives Gary a huge sum of money after putting a second mortgage on the home that she & Brett own. So, in the third season, with practically no money and no home, Brett, Kim, their infant daughter Epponnee Rae Craig (Zara Harrington) and their large dog Cujo move into Kath & Kel's home. Of course, not a huge change for Kim as she spent so much time at her mother's house anyway.
Two regularly recurring characters that are frequently shown during the series are two pompous women that work at a pricey cookery store at, where else, "Fountain Lakes Mall". Played by Jane Turner and Gina Riley with hilarious accents, Prue and Trude (as they're called) generally spend their working hours canting & gossiping in their fustian speech, as well as criticizing store customers whom they regard as being beneath them. Another regularly recurring character is the woman Marion (Marg Downey) who presided over Kath & Kel's wedding. Unfortunately, she wasn't actually licensed to perform weddings, so Kath & Kel's hilarious first season wedding was not actually legal. Though some in America may find it initially difficult to understand the characters' Australian accents, slang and patois, as well as Kim's frequent neologisms and misused words, over time the meaning and resulting humor can become more clear and entertaining. Overall, I rate "Kath & Kim" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. Though many compare "Kath & Kim" with the outrageous British TV sitcom named "Absolutely Fabulous", the humor and style of the two shows is quite different; but each stands on its own as being an extremely clever, funny & entertaining TV sitcom. I hope that "Kath & Kim" will one day become available in the U.S. on Region 1 DVD's, but people with multi-region DVD players should be able to watch this hilarious show.

Kath & Kim is a hilarious TV show from Australia, shot like a reality show and satiring the suburban materialism of Kath and her daughter Kim. It's sort of a less upper-crust Australian version of AbFab. It's currently taking up half of my Tivo because it's not available on DVD in the U.S. and I can't bear to delete any episodes. Sundance Channel is currently showing episodes here and there, and before that it was on Trio, which is no longer available through my DirecTV system. Can't wait to purchase it on DVD!

I love this show. Gina Riley and Jane Turner are brilliant, and this show is different, nice and unuuuuuusal. And funny.
And the Shirley Bassey-esque theme song belted out by talented actor, comedienne and singer Gina Riley who stars as Kim, is a Classic.

Wow! This series is the best example of modern Australian comedy. Along with their previous series 'Big Girls Blouse', the trio of Jane Turner, Gina Riley and Magda Szubanski have created extremely incredible characters in which every woman can see a part of themselves or at least, relate to, while having a good laugh at the absurdities of surburban life.

Although might not appeal to all senses of humor, I can not get enough of this show. Give it a try!
It is set in suburban Australia, and just emphasizes the Aussie sense of humor. They like to make fun of themselves, by think they are the hottest things ever "horn-bags", but are just typical suburban women wearing midriff and mini-skirts when they shouldn't be! "It would be a crime to society to not let me go out looking this hot!" If you like the British show Ab Fab, this is the Australian answer. You never hear much about Australians on the screen except for all the glamorous people like Nicole Kidman etc, but Australian tv and films like this are just wonderful. I wish it were more easily available here!

Australia's answer to Absolutely Fabulous!,
This review is from: Kath & Kim for Region 1 , United States and Cananda (DVD)
I'm sorry but I love this show. It makes me want to move there only to discover that my life would probably be the same. Kath is energetic, physical active mother while her daughter Kim is the lazy, bored daughter. Both women are married. Kath's wedding to Del Knight is something to remember in the final episode. Both the actresses write and produce this series which explains why it is so well done much like a documentary about reality. I love Sharon who is overweight but physically active in sports and is Kim's second best friend besides her mother. The mother and daughter played by Gina Riley and Janina Turner do a fabulous job of bringing Kath and Kim to life. I bought the dvd in England which is only available in region 2. I'm hoping that my dvd player can be programed to be region free. Anyway, Kath and Kim, I believe is Australia's finest comedy show around not that I know too much about Australian comedies myself.
