4.0 out of 5 stars Katharine For Kids, June 27, 2011
Katharine Hepburn buffs won't learn anything new in this 1987 book in Chelesa House's "American Women of Achievement" series of biographies of important women of the 19th and 20th centuries aimed at young readers in the junior-high age range and published many for purchase by libraries but this is a very attractive book, with an attractive embossed hardcover artwork of Hepburn circa 1967 and several photos throughout the book, some of them fairly rare (though not all are of Kate but of other people mentioned in the text although Hepburn of course dominates). Mae West and Katharine Hepburn I believe were the only film stars covered in this book series (Helen Hayes and Ethel Barrymore also had volumes but their books consider them mainly as stage actresses). The pictures of Kate spanning from childhood the near the time of publication (the book came out the year Kate turned 80; her life had another fifteen years to go with several more tv films and one motion picture; she passed away of natural causes in 2003 at 96, one of the longest lived major actresses ever). Katharine Hepburn fans will likely want to own a copy of this title for their collections, even if it was originally meant for younger readers (written basically like an elongated general interest magazine profile for all ages).
