Katherine's Southern Cooking is an indispensible collection of 40 recipes that are the staples of traditional Southern cooking. Cheese Straws, Buttermilk Biscuits, Southern Style Cornbread, Country Fried Steak and Gravy, Southern Style Deep Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, Fried Okra, Banana Pudding, Southern Sweet Potato Souffle - you know and love every one of these dishes, don't you? .....it's simply five chapters in black and white. But it's a bargain at seven bucks. And I have no doubt that you'll have this book dog-eared from use in no time. Doug Mosley, National Barbecue News

Southern Cooking.. That is the food for me!!!

I purchased Katherine's original book "I'll Have The Soup and Salad" and have used it frequently. When I saw she had a new book, "Katherine's Southern Cooking" I immediately purchased it and already have a Hamburger Pie planned for dinner tonight. Richard Blackmon

About the Author

I have always loved to cook and have had the pleasure of starting many friends and family on their path to find their "inner cook". I catered for a company that produced television commercials until a job transfer moved me to another city and have written local cookbooks for years. I had not given much thought to producing cookbooks for a larger audience until Amazon came along. I now have the time to devote to the projects and it is going to be a blast.

This is a book after my own heart(As we say in the South.)Katherine's recipes make my mouth water and my mind flood with memories. When she talks about recipes that always show up at a family reunion, I remember them so well that I can taste them.

I had to go make collards and cornbread as soon as I got the book. Cooking Collards is a true art, just in case you northerners and west coast folks don't know. These are perfect.Have you ever made a vegetable meal and had collards as one of the veggies. If you haven't, you have to give this a try. There isn't anything as good as fresh veggies and cornbread ( there is a great recipe for cornbread in this book.)

My son's favorite dessert is banana pudding. I will make Katherine's recipe the next time his family comes for dinner.

I have a favorite chicken pot pie recipe, but I know I will try the one in this book because it sounds so perfect. The fried chicken recipe can't be beat. It is like my Grandmother's.

This book is highly recommended Everyone deserves to have a little Southern Cooking in their life. These recipes are so well written and easy to follow that anyone can become a Southern Cook in an instant.

I purchased Katherine's original book "I'll Have The Soup and Salad" and have used it frequently. When I saw she had a new book, "Katherine's Southern Cooking" I immediately purchased it and already have a Hamburger Pie planned for dinner tonight.

Katherine includes a lot of tips and advice along with her recipes that is a boon to those of us who are not as accomplished in the kitchen as she so obviously is. In addition, she includes a bio in her book. As it turns out, I was born and raised 65 miles from where she lives now so Southern Cooking is subject near and dear to my heart. Going through the book last night, I found many recipes that were just like my mother fixed when I was growing up sans fast food. When Katherine talked about cornbread and buttermilk, it brought back a lot of memories. When we have cornbread, we always bake extra and my half has jalapenos in it. The next day, I get the largest glass I can find and about half an onion, crumble the cornbread and add whole milk (We called it "sweet milk" back in the day.) and happily enjoy my meal eating the onion as if it were bread.

Great job, Katherine..You brought back some fond memories.

Katherine has excelled herself with this splendid guide to Southern home cooking. A wonderful variety of comfort food that is perfect for the coming cold weather. Easy to follow, clearly formatted with handy nutritional values for each recipe. I just wish some of the ingredients were more readily available in English supermarkets! They can all be found online here at Amazon though.

This book is referenced as volume II in Baldwin's "Know About Cooking Series", of which the first was titled "I'll Have the Soup and Salad". Baldwin briefly discusses her previous publishing experience and she did indeed put together her own books and distribute them around her local area.

There's no snazzy graphics or pictures (except for the cover photo of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and a biscuit - yum!); it's simply five chapters in black and white. But it's a bargain at seven bucks. And I have no doubt that you'll have this book dog-eared from use in no time.

I LOVED the formatting of this book. Kudos to the author/editor for creating a professional, easy to read, easy to follow book with all the pertinent information. This book has yield, prep time, cook time, step by step instructions, and it even has nutritional information! Most (if not all) recipes also has tips at the end with suggestions on how to modify to suit your needs and preference. The only thing missing are pictures!

Tucker up to some good old-fashioned southern cooking after preparing some of the delicious recipes found in Katherine’s Southern Cooking by Katherine Baldwin.

Baldwin has offered up a collection of southern-style recipes such as:

Chicken Pot Pie
Country Fried Steak and Gravy
Fried Flounder
Cheese Straws
Buttermilk Biscuits
Mixed Greens
Creamed Style Corn
Banana Pudding
Southern Sweet Potato Souffle

At the end of her cookbook she offers the nutritional comparisons of various fats including bacon grease. Most southerners use bacon grease to cook with, and I can remember saving the can of bacon fat for cooking. The can sat next to the stove. I still use bacon grease for cooking, but I keep it in the refrigerator as bacon grease is now considered a “treat” and used for special meals.

There is an active table of contents making navigation easy.

Recommend.

Now here is a book that's full of the tastes of the South. If you are not able to go there and visit personally, cooking up some of these recipes will take you there. I've tried some of them and while I wouldn't want to eat this type of food every day, I have to say that this would have to be some of the best tasting food on the planet.

What more is there to say, except YUM!
