Right now, this book is out of print and selling used for over $300 dollars based on the current prices listed in Amazon. That's bloody outrageous.

If you want these recipes, don't bother buying this. Kathleen King lost the rights to the "Kathleen's Bake Shop" trademark, but she has a new cookbook available from her new business venture: Tate's Bake Shop...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Hamptons Shop and Great Food, February 24, 2000
This review is from: Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook: The Best Recipes from Southhampton's Favorite Bakery for Homestyle Cookies, Cakes, Pies, Muffins, and Breads (Plastic Comb)
I can't say enough about the whole Kathleen's Bake Shop and recipe book experience. During the summer I spend many weekends in the Hamptons, and everytime I'm there I stop at Kathleen's Bake Shop where the food is amazing. My favorite dessert during the summer is her in-season raspberry crumb pie. Not only is EVERYTHING there outstanding, but the employees are the friendliest and most down to earth people you could want to meet, especially for 'The Hamptons'. Anyway, I bought her recipe book to duplicate her unbelievable chocolate chip cookies and boy was I thrilled with the results! I couldn't tell the difference between mine and Kathleen's from her shop. My hat's off to their excellent recipe testing and editing!

Buy this book, buy it, buy it, buy it! You'll be glad you did.

I bought this book for my mom many years ago and now I find I borrow it all the time. The blueberry muffins are "the best". The recipes in the book are the type that you use time and time again - everyones favorites. From muffins to pies, Kathleen's gets it right every time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Baking Book, December 30, 1998

This review is from: Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook: The Best Recipes from Southhampton's Favorite Bakery for Homestyle Cookies, Cakes, Pies, Muffins, and Breads (Plastic Comb)
This is one of the best 'homemade' baking books. Contrary to the review made by Publisher's Weekly, this book is easily understood by the novice baker and is a welcome book by the experienced baker. Recipes use easily available ingredients and the outcome always pleases. Kathleen King, author of this cookbook didn't become well-known in both The Hamptons and in Manhattan for nothing--she had a great following for her wonderful baked creations. The best recipes in the book are the brownies which are possibly the easiest and best brownies ever. The Chocolate Mallow Pie and Pumpkin Bread are also delicious. If you love to bake this is a great addition to your baking recipe repetoire. Don't take the Publisher's Weekly review to heart...if you love home-baked goods, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

Also recommended: Pie and Pastry Bible, Cake Bible, Mrs. Fields Cookie Book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This has the best of the best!!, May 1, 1998
This review is from: Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook: The Best Recipes from Southhampton's Favorite Bakery for Homestyle Cookies, Cakes, Pies, Muffins, and Breads (Plastic Comb)
I bought this book because of a rave review which appeared in the St. (MN) Paul Pioneer Press a few years ago. I have never been let-down by any of the recipes which appear in it. Can you imagine two loaves of banana bread which require 4-1/2 cups of mashed bananas to create? Or how about chocolate chip cookies which are so good that we have to buy chips in ten pound bags at Sam's Club? In this book, you will find only one recipe for any one thing, as the author puts only her favorite recipes of each type in it. Buy this book, and get extras for gifts and yourself. People will ask where you got the recipe, and you will find that your copy will wear out and you will need another.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise, February 21, 2003

I was really surprised by this book. It is simply wonderful. She has a nice variety of recipes in here, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, and brownies that are to die for. The book isn't well known, and it should be. The recipes are written in an easy to follow manner, and will have you baking up delicious treats for the special people in your life in no time. I also liked her anecdotes, on what worked, and how she came across some of her recipes. Looking for a book to spruce up your baking, go no further!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Scrumptuous!, November 15, 2000

This review is from: Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook: The Best Recipes from Southhampton's Favorite Bakery for Homestyle Cookies, Cakes, Pies, Muffins, and Breads (Plastic Comb)
My husband purchased this book a few years ago. He loved visiting Kathleen's Bake Shop enroute to Shelter Island and decided to buy the book. He met me a few years later, and, when he found out I enjoyed baking, showed me Kathleen's recipe book. It is simply the easiest recipe book to follow. I've made several of the tasty treats in the book and have never been disappointed with the results. The brownies are "to die for"; many of my friends can't believe how delicious they are yet incredibly easy to make. The oatmeal-raisin cookies always come out deliciously moist. They are a favorite of my husband, father, brother, and nephews! I'm sure my infant son will enjoy them when he gets older. And most Sundays I make a loaf of cranberry or blueberry (I use the cranberry nut recipe but just substitute blueberries) nut bread as a special breakfast treat for my husband at work. His co-workers are quite envious! If you enjoy baking as much as I do, you must add this book to your collection. You won't be disappointed!

*Any* recipe I have used from this cookbook has received rave reviews! The brownie recipe is the best! The blueberry buckle is also wonderful. This is a "must have" cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite cookbook (& my roomates too), January 12, 2004

I have been going to Kathleen's bakeshop in Southampton for years and remember buying her cookies and pies at farm stands throughout the Hamptons.

I have often used my mother's copy until she bought me a copy for Christmas one year in fear that I would steal it.

The muffins are to die for especially the pineapple-orange and the Chocolate Mousse Cake is heaven. I have a quick trick for the whipped cream topping too. Use organic heavy cream because it makes a stiffer whipped cream and last longer too. I have to admit that I am traditionalist and make the chocolate chip cookies. I love them because they are crisp and buttery.

This cookbook is not for dieters because you will eat more than one. My roomate can vouch for that too.
