Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2—These kid-friendly stories illustrate symptoms and describe appropriate medical treatment for common childhood ailments. In the first title, Katie, a bear, is sneezing and sniffling and cannot practice for the ice-skating show. In Fever, little Peeper, a frog, is excited about the special picnic, but is not allowed to attend because he has a fever. Finally, Sadie, a giraffe, is preparing to go to the school fair but develops a sore throat. In each book, the protagonist's mother consults Dr. Hippo, a pediatrician. The bright, colorful illustrations depict comfortable home settings. Though the stories are formulaic and idealize doctor-patient relationships, they clearly describe the conditions and offer kids and caregivers suitable medical advice. A pamphlet for parents is included on the inside back cover.—Kristen Frey, Rocky River Public Library, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for parents and caregivers, January 8, 2009
By K. Vetrano (New York) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE the Dr. Hippo series of books! They are a must have for any parent or those who care for young children.

The stories are easy to read and understand for children. The artwork is colorful, cheery and adoable.

I found the parent information section in the back pocket a must have. I learn a lot about everyday ailments that I never knew before.

I love these books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational for both children & parents, May 28, 2008
Reviewed by Cayden (age 3-1/2) and Max (age 20-months) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (5/08)

"Katie Caught a Cold" is a story about a bear named Katie who comes down with a cold right before her upcoming ice show. Her mom calls Dr. Hippo and tells him Katie's symptoms. Dr. Hippo tells Katie's mom that the cold could be part of a viral infection and should go away on its own without antibiotics. Sure enough, Katie's cold goes away and is better in time for her to skate in the show.

Cayden: "We have read Dr. Hippo books before- a giraffe one and an elephant one! I like these books!"
Max: "Doctor!"

Cayden: "Look they are playing tic-tac-toe, the game that Papa taught me! When can we play that again?"

Cayden: "What is mucous?"
Max: "Mucous!"

Cayden: "She didn't have to go to the doctor because she just had a cold. Her mom just called the doctor instead."

Cayden: "I liked when they had the ice show because they got medals and had their pictures taken!"

Parent's comments:

"Katie Caught a Cold" is a great book to educate parents and children about colds and how antibiotics will not do anything to help them. Along with the story is a booklet inside the back cover written especially for parents. In this booklet is all of the information you need about children's colds such as what medicines to give, what the complications of a cold are, and when to call the doctor.

Like all of the other Dr. Hippo books, "Katie Caught a Cold" is filled with wonderfully-detailed and brightly-colored illustrations which my children love. The storyline is one that they definitely can relate to since they have had many colds this past winter. This is a great book for both children and parents alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Dr. Hippo Story, June 12, 2006
Dr. Hippo continues with his warm and reassuring ways, ultimately teaching Katie's mom (and readers) about appropriate management of common colds. My own 3 year old daughter has bumped this Dr. Hippo story to #1 on the reading list--she loves the beautiful illustrations and looks for clues from the other Dr. Hippo books throughout (keep an eye open for Eddie the Elephant!). Parents and kids will really enjoy this one!
