5.0 out of 5 stars Happy purchaser
At first I was a little sceptical at buying this DVD as I am more favouring of straight concerts than documentary but as a big fan of Katie Melua I couldn't resist. So glad I am that I chose to purchase. This is a superbly presented documentary of a very unique event and the preparatory work that went into making it all possible. The concert itself was, as one would...

2.0 out of 5 stars Katie delivers, production & technical crew drop the ball
While this is far from the worst concert DVD that I have watched, it ranks as one of the most disappointing. And, yes, I was aware before I bought it that much of the video chronicles the preparations for a concert deep underwater in a gas production platform. As someone who is interested in science, I found this portion of the video mildly interesting, but I buy...

The concert itself was, as one would expect of this superb artist, simply magnificent. Not only is Katie a stunningly beautiful lady, she has a voice that I rate as the greatest female voice since Connie Francis.
If you are a fan then this is a must. If you are not yet a fan but enjoy music of the very highest quality then buy this or any Katie Melua release and be delighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Songbird, August 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Katie Melua: Concert Under the Sea (DVD)
I am a HUGE Eva Cassidy fan and Katie Melua has a very similar sound that can best be described as a songbird much like Eva has been described. This DVD of her concert beneath the sea is compelling to watch. It takes you through all the legal and safety issues including helicopter and boat drills that I would want no part of and I am a retired U. S. Coast Guardsman, yet, Katie did it in style. This is not your typical concert type DVD. It is in two parts, first the lead up to getting permission to perform 300 meters beneath the North Sea in the leg of a producing gas offshore rig and then the concert itself. I highly recommend this DVD to everyone regardless of your particular taste or style of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overproduced Audio Track - Loses some Ambience, March 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Katie Melua: Concert Under the Sea (DVD)
Video & Audio quality excellent; however, slightly overproduced i.e., I would have enjoyed this performance more if the sound engineers would have allowed MORE of the natural ambience (echoes off shaft walls), as in the one or two seconds it was evident in rehearsal. Music tracks sound more in-studio than under-the-sea, but overall, a very enjoyable experience.

I loved this DVD. I thoroughly enjoyed it and especially the live concert portion, but the surrounding documentary was interesting and well done as well. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who likes her music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, February 7, 2011
This review is from: Katie Melua: Concert Under the Sea (DVD)
This DVD is a blow you away material - in addition to a rivetting performance and her unforgettable delivery, I enjoyed going through the motions with the band, having to perform at an oil rig plant. Truly an outstanding and a moving experience.

Wow! A friend turned me on to Katie Melua via YouTube, so I thought I'd pick up a video. This one sounded interesting, and was it ever! Just the whole oil rig documentary was incredible. Then, of course, there's Katie Melua, beautiful and an incredible singer. The big surprise in the video is that the captain of the oil rig is an accomplished pianist who performs on the DVD as well. If you're looking for a full length concert video, this isn't it. If you like feel-good documentaries and Katie's music, check it out.

This video was awesome!! My 72 year old Dad loved it as much as I did. It's interesting, much more interesting than any other concert on DVD. The sound quality is great, and Katie is as beautiful as the music she creates.

If you're a Katie Melua fan, you'll love this.

While this is far from the worst concert DVD that I have watched, it ranks as one of the most disappointing. And, yes, I was aware before I bought it that much of the video chronicles the preparations for a concert deep underwater in a gas production platform. As someone who is interested in science, I found this portion of the video mildly interesting, but I buy concert videos for the music and, in this department, the video fails to deliver. Katie's predictable excellence is nearly completely sabotaged by the film's production values which contrast dramatically with the quality of what appears to be the use of videotape to document concert preparations. Worthwhile concert DVDs tend to offer a feeling of presence, provided by exemplary use of technology. Onstage, in this video, Katie and her supporting band appear more like cartoon characters, and offer no feeling of intimacy that such a small audience and venue could have provided. Contrast this with the terrific examples of the medium's potential provided by Tori Amos' "Live at Montreux", Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance", Alison Krauss + Union Station Live, An Evening with the Dixie Chicks (apart from the intermittent and irritating grainy film inserts), and Nora Jones' "Live in New Orleans" on the esteemed Blue Note label. I look forward to Katie's next release.
