Members of the Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts tell their stories of those awful days. Despite desperate circumstances and with great generosity of spirit, these witnesses to the greatest natural disaster in North American history recorded their experiences with a broad diversity of voices, over fifty women in all.
A Vicksburg resident and noted photographer, Melody Golding came to the coast as a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Her photographic journal of those days accompanies this text. Ellen Gilchrist, whose residence in Ocean Springs suffered damage, writes an essay; and Mary Anderson Pickard, whose home Katrina destroyed, provides a moving coda. Royalties from book sales will aid MSC Artist members.
