Biography

In early 1983, KATRINA & THE WAVES (as they were now called) pooled their meager resources to fund the recording of an album's worth of original material - all songs written by Rew and sung by Leskanich - intended to be sold at live shows. Numerous labels on both sides of the Atlantic were approached, but only Canadian indie Attic Records, which had previously released recordings by ... Read more in Amazon's Katrina & The Waves Store

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best female voices in modern music August 24, 2000
Format:Audio CD
most of us only know Katrina for the hit "Walking on Sunshine" but the numerous tracks on this greatest hits set are just as catchy and uplifting. Katrina knows how to rock out and have fun. "Sun Street" is reminiscent of the Beatles and "That's the Way" makes you want to jump up and start clapping and shaking your fist in the air. They do a superior version of "Going Down to Liverpool" which was written by a member of the Waves and was later covered by the Bangles. One listen and you will be hooked. It's a fun CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, briefest power-pop bands ever December 18, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Dang KATW were a powerhouse pop group! Rockin' & rollickin'. And Katrina Leskanich's voice was a marvel -- galeforce and gorgeous. This great collection is a real bargain. So many wonderful songs beyond the obvious monster hit. "Do You Want Crying," "That's The Way" and "Is That It?" are personal favorites. My only complaint (sorry!) is the omission of Vince de la Cruz's beautiful "Sleep On My Pillow," one of the all-time great lost rock ballads. The lyrics, melody and Katrina's vocal practically drip with dignity and heartbreak. Makes me WEEP on my pillow!

Only music by walking on the sunshine was worth it, but it has other great tracks. It is one of the CDs that I listen more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Features ex-Soft Boy Kimberley Rew February 16, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Yeah, yeah, yeah ... everybody knows "that" song. But this compilation of "hits" by Katrina & The Waves has a whole lot going for it than just "Walking on Sunshine." Yes, Katrina had a very pleasing voice, but for me the real draw in this band was guitarist Kimberley Rew (formerly of the Soft Boys), who also wrote many of the songs (and if you get the chance, check out his classic solo album, "Bible of Bop"). Some of the tunes that he wrote --- "Red Wine and Whiskey" ... "Going Down to Liverpool" ... "Machine Gun Smith" --- are classics of Power Pop. Not every song on here is a winner --- toward the end of the disc there are a few weak power ballads --- but for the most part this is a very pleasing collection from a band that was quite underrated in their time. Good value for the money too, with nearly 70 minutes of music.
