Katsuren is a gentle novel suffused with the atmosphere of Okinawa. Its sometime romantic, sometime mysterious story is presented with a sense of place, and the history of place. Celine Nisaragi makes a world I'd want to walk into and an adventure that I would, in my younger years, liked to have taken on.
Karen Holt, begins her journey as an archeologist with a career mission and finds herself falling in love with story and people and giving in to a culture with which she is less familiar than she thinks. But aside from Karen, the place itself is the main character, and this novel becomes a journey into a new world for her. A very enjoyable first novel.
