FIVE FUN FACTS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ME

1. While in high school, my band recorded a song I wrote. Sadly, it never sold.

2. As a college student, I was stranded in London one night. A religious cult took me in and tried to convert me. It didn't take.

3. At one point in our marriage, my wife and I owned a Thoroughbred. They sure eat a lot.

4. I wrote and directed a short film starring Rose Hobart, a truly amazing woman who began her film career at Fox in 1930.

5. Many years ago in Pasadena CA, I ran into the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, who was presumably on his way back to Cal Tech. I wish I had been better prepared.

Steven Ramirez is an adult male, married, with kids.

And most of his writing is aimed at adults and usually has a weird twist at the end.

So this was some major departure for him.
It's aimed at kids;
It's told in the voice of a female;
She's an adolescent;
It has to capture the reality of a 2- and an 8-year-old;
He had to learn how to style hair;
It was a period style at that; and
It has a fantasy element to it.

What's the best compliment I can pay him?

With all of that it worked!

Keep them coming Mr. Ramirez.

- I was a teenager way back in big hair days. Once I went to the beauty parlor and got a beehive and then couldn't understand why my dad thought my hair was awful. Little did I care. That hair landed me a new boyfriend at the roller skating rink that night. It was like a big fin on top of my head that gave me extra speed like a show-off shark, and that boy was helpless before it.
- So, I feel particularly qualified to review Steven Ramirez's young adult short novel, Katy's Big Hair Day. This is a book that you won't close until the last page. Better still, it will keep a smile on your face from page one to the last sentence. Big hair is funny and fun, and Ramirez brings that fun to lol life.
- Katy is a bold, original kid who is not afraid to be very different right up front in public, even in a trendy Italian restaurant in L.A. And her parents (bless their hearts) are brave enough to walk in with her and her mile-high hair through all the snickers from the evening patrons. This scene is as endearing as it gets.
- And then there is the catastrophe that lands Katie in a . . .well, you'll find out about that.
- This book is packed full with humor and delightful writing. It's a short breezy read that nearly any parent or teen will enjoy. I highly recommend it, especially if you need something to lighten your day. gwlupo
