So far, great.,

I just received this book a few days ago and have read the first few chapters. My impression is that this is a great mix of board review with actual pharmacology. Don't expect in-depth cell-signaling though. This isn't the point of this book. It's a pharm book for med students looking to prep for the boards.
The pictures are in color and very pretty. LOTS of multiple choice questions at the end of each chapters. Probably a worthwhile investment for most medical students who want a dedicated pharmacology review text.

I got this as a supplement for med pharm class. The organization of the drugs seems good but I primarily use this book for the questions which are plentiful and hit the major points. The explanations for the questions are well written. The chapters are very short and concise so this is probably not a great book for those looking for in depth mechanisms/modes of action. I expect this to be a good review book for Step 1. It is important to note that this book does not have an online option for the questions which seems to be standard on almost all new med review books. The authors should consider partnering with thepoint or studentconsult for the next edition in order to implement online access.

For anyone in medical school, this is a great book. However, it is not much different than the last (8th) edition. This edition adds nice tables at the end of the chapter, but 97% of the chapter content is the same. So if you're on a budget, the last edition is fine. Also, this edition is about twice as large as the 8th, only because they have increased the font size and spacing.

When studying medical pharmacology it is easy to get bogged down to facts and mechanisms and lose sight of the clinical picture. This text does a great job of organization for clinical practice, which for me makes it much easier to digest. It is also written with a direct descriptive style that is better for my learning style than the outline format found in Lippincott's review. Fortunately it lacks the overwhelming depth of Goodman and Gilman's or Katzung's pharmacology texts. There are useful diagrams throughout. I gave it four stars, however, because the end of chapter questions are don't really represent the board-style, as they are primarily basic recall. I also question the medication choices as high-yield. Still one of the most useful resources I have found for pharmacology.

I bought this book at the recommendation of the Office of Medical Student Education at my school. It does a pretty good job of explaining pharmacology, including kinetics, drug interactions, etc. The only thing I don't like is the way the book is divided up. It's in sections of things like "Drugs for Heart Failure" or "Drugs for Arrhythmias." Because of this, one drug is mentioned several places in the book, and you have to keep flipping back and forth to get all the information.
This may be helpful for some people, but it's not my favorite way to study. However, the first few chapters of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are really great, and each chapter has practice questions (with answers and explanations).

This book may be slightly too detailed for step 1, but its actually pretty condensed with a lot of good information. I found it a great read to give me a good overview of pharm topics for my med school pharm class. It is also good for step 1, but i would agree that its probably a touch too detailed for step 1... but its definitely not too detailed for pharm class or to prepare you for third and fourth year of med school. I recommend it.

This a great book for an overview of what a drug or class of drugs is all about, but in some cases I still needed to refer to the PDR for more specific biochemistry and possible side effects. Overall I would recommend, good reference book for the shelf.

Nice if you're looking for a general overview by classes. There are a few major specific points for some drugs per class. Every section ends with a nice table of main features for the major drugs in that category.

This is a great text for a first time learner and a student (like myself) reviewing for the national boards (step 1). The chapters are very clear and not wordy, and the tables at the end of each chapter make for a great preview and review. I am even reading the appendix since it clearly outlines important drugs usually covered on board exams. I recommend this text very highly!
