5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent pharmacology book, but time commitment necessary, November 1, 2001
By
This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who, like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and complete book, March 5, 2004
This is the perfect book for using concurrently with a medical school pharmacology course. It is more complete and accurate than Lippincott and it contains amazing figures and graphs that help to delineate the differences between similar drugs, for example the catecholoamine receptor agonists.

It would be difficult to get through this whole book if you started from scratch a month or two before the boards, but if you used it along with your pharmacology course then it is excellent for review. Each chapter is followed by useful board-type questions that help you assess how much you have absorbed.

In addition Lange offers this book in a size guaranteed to satisfy every customre. If you use this book during the year and then study for the shelf using their "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology" you will have a very easy time memorizing the facts from this smaller book, because it corresponds nicely to this medium-sized text.

I think that this book is very well-organized. Possibly more importantly I think that the index and the appendixes make looking up drugs and side effects very easy which makes this book a great reference to keep even after you've taken Step I. It's still on my shelf and I have used it for reference during my third year clerkships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for USMLE Step 1, May 13, 2002
The book contains a system review which may facilitate understanding the mechanisms how drugs work. Each group of drugs, say sympathomimetics, takes only several pages, followed by a series of USMLE-type questions. A little bit better than Lippincott's pharmacology board review. I've read both of 'em.
