Book Description

Microexplorer January 1999
Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure, Blue Water Cruising In a 20 Foot Boat, is a romantic, true-life saga about an intrepid couple who follow their dream of sailing over the horizon to the South Seas. Join the Dewells in their tiny sloop Kawabunga, as they embark upon an extraordinary voyage.

Share in the excitement of Charlie's first offshore passage. He sails alone for 42 days from San Diego to the enchanted island of Nuku Hiva.

Margaret and Charlie rendezvous in Tahiti and cruise through the Societies before sailing up the Line Islands to Christmas Island. They spend three weeks on mysterious Palmyra Atoll, an uninhabited collection of islands and motus where they reclaim their childhood -- spending their days beachcombing and exploring Palmyra's three azure lagoons.

The couple drive little Kawabunga hard during the challenging 1,000 mile passage to the Hawaiian Islands -- testing their seamanship, their relationship and their courage. There is plenty of high-seas adventure on the passage home. Charlie single-hands the boat up and over the North Pacific High to Marina del Rey, fighting the battle of his life with a North Pacific storm.

Along the way the Dewells make new friends, overcome hardships and discover they are up to the challenges of storms at sea, equipment failures and riots in paradise. Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure will inspire you to follow your dream.

286 pages, 16 page color insert, glossary, extensive index, charts, line drawings, equipment list.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure proves again that you do not need a six digit-priced yacht to enjoy blue water cruising. In their sturdy 20-foot yacht, the Dewells did the California-Tahiti-Hawaii circuit with as much grace as any gold-plater. Places they visited and sailing challenges they met seem unchanged over the years suggesting that, unlike Alexander the Great's comment on there being no more lands to conquer, there are still waters to conquer by small boat.

Wannabe cruisers can step into the shoes of a plucky sailing couple via this book and learn how to cut the ties that bind them to urban bedlam while the armchair sailor will enjoy a nautical yarn with humor and grit and plenty of characters. You will experience a roller coaster ride of emotions as Charlie and Margaret tackle and overcome family and financial matters and the officialdom of new lands.

If you are not out sailing now, this is your inspiration to go cruising before it is too late." -- Earl Hinz, author of Landfalls of Paradise

"The story of their adventure is told with warmth and humor. . . He calls it as he sees it." -- Santana Magazine

A must read for the small boat cruiser who dreams of the long-haul into paradise. Good read." -- Latitudes & Attitudes

Cruisers considering venturing into blue water aboard a small craft will find Dewell's book invaluable. -- Dorothy Rice Bennett, The Log Newspapers

I could hardly put their book down because it was such an exciting read. -- David C. Henley, Publisher, Lahontan Valley News

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved it!!, July 2, 1999
This review is from: Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure: Blue Water Cruising in a Twenty Foot Boat (Microexplorer) (Hardcover)
What a magnificent adventure!

This book is a must read for any real sailor, sailor wannabee, non-sailor, adventurist, South Sea Island aficionado and/or for any of us who doubt that dreams can come true. Charlie's passion for his mission coupled with his unique and humorous style make it fun for even those of us who are nautical dummies. The author masterfully weaves in the history and local culture of his Island destinations and paints a vivid description of the tropical paradises, which he visits. The adventure of the Kawabunga is one "hell of a good story" and clearly illustrates that some risks are worth taking. Charlie and Margaret have "set the bar high" in terms of goal setting and dream fulfillment. Their accomplishments will serve as constant incentive for me to never give up and to continually push myself to achieve my goals. Not only did they overcome many obstacles to accomplish and survive their death-defying voyage, but they also endured all of the financial and literary challenges and did us all a huge favor by authoring and publishing this magical chronicle of their trip. Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure is a special book and makes a fabulous gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read about chasing and fullfilling our dreams, May 23, 2002

This review is from: Kawabunga's South Seas Adventure: Blue Water Cruising in a Twenty Foot Boat (Microexplorer) (Hardcover)
A friend loaned me this book about a week ago and I found it to be a great read. I'm one of those wan-a-bee's "trying to leave the dock" and will begin retirement soon with a boat (trawler) in my immediate future. This book affirmed that I'm heading in the right direction to begin living my dream as soon as I can. I'll be purchasing a copy to share with friends and to read again while I'm in the water chasing whales and my own dreams in Washington State and Alaska.
