This birthday present is a favorite. The quality is cheap, China made, however, for a small drum with lots of various abilities, it is a great first drum to access if there is true interest and ability.

I purchased this item with some apprehesion due to previous reviews. Well, it turned out to be pretty nice and our 4 year-old son loves it. Yes, you can hear the drumsticks hitting the plastic (which is why I gave it four stars) but that is certainly not a reason to not buy it. It is the best one of its kind out there (we tried a few others in the stores) and is loud enough. Our son enjoys it. I wish they still made the one with the stand, which may have made it worth the price. I think this item was overpriced by about $10.

My daughter though she'd like a drum set but we didn't want to invest in a real set given the cost and the likelihood that she'd play them for a few days and then abandon them. So we picked this in hopes that she'd see if she really wanted to learn how to play drums. She didn't ever really like this and never really tried to do anything with them. They are pretty flimsy and cheap looking (of course they *are* inexpensive so I didn't have high hopes of much quality...and they aren't). I think they looked too much like a toy rather than being what she had hoped for. We have since gotten a real set of drums (on loan from a friend) and she took lessons for several months...but decided that she didn't really like the drums. So, in the end, the investment was about what I'd hoped for. If you don't mind the cheap look and them being somewhat flimsy, I think this is a pretty good value for the price.
