5.0 out of 5 stars Cool item... some assembly rqd
I own this item and wish I'd purchased it from Amazon (it's about $30 cheaper here).

In any case, it works well and is very "heavy duty". It also looks pretty good. It's about 2x as large as a std "Weber" grill and sits about half as high.

Assembly is a bit longer than you'd like, but tolerable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Outdoor Fireplace, June 20, 2001
By A Customer

We have had over a dozen very large fires and haven't had a problem. The key is that the iron needs to be tempered before having any large fires in it. To do this, light very small fires keeping the temperature low, and allow them to burn for increasingly extended periods of time. Gradually build increasingly large subsequent fires. Now that ours is tempered, I know this will last for at least ten years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great opportunity to enjoy the out-of-doors at home, December 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Kay Home Products 30071 Iron Hearth Portable Fire Pit & Grill (Lawn & Patio)
Researching outdoor fireplaces, we found that the Kay Home 30070 Iron Hearth Portable Fire Pit & Grill the best product for the price. It is the largest in diameter we could find, and also the depth of the pit was at least 2X deeper than similar products. Upon using the product, it nearly floated across the backyard with the wheels and handle construction. Viewing the fire was not prohibited by the screen, but kept any large embers from escaping. The grill worked perfectly. There was enough room on the grill to feed more people than we expected, and the design of the grill does not prohibit you from adding wood during the cooking process. We consider it THE best buy, and if you are looking, this is the one to buy. With its cast iron construction, it will outlast its competitors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, November 20, 2001

My friends received this product as a gift over a year ago. I have enjoyed it vicariously through them until today when I ordered my own. I intend to cure the metal properly to avoid the cracking that other customers encountered. I think the cast iron construction is well worth the labor of love. My friends bring their fire kettle to a bi-annual festival that only allows contained fires. At the last outing, we had 20+ people enjoying marshmallows at our campsite! It is truly big and once cured, it will house a raging fire! I spent a lot of time comparing and can't find a more sturdy, versatile fire kettle than this one for the money.

I have loved this since I received it. A bit tedious to put together but worth it once it's done. I have not had the cracking experienced by others fortunately. This is a great, deep pit that holds a lot of wood and allows you to enjoy the outdoors well into the early hours of the morning. The grill attachment holds a lot of food and works out nicely with the slot that allows you to keep adding wood without having to remove the grill from the pit. The only downfall was that on the first use the little hook that holds the handle and the handle itself blew out from the heat so that is no longer helpful but you can easily pull it around by the frame. No biggie but a better weld would have been helpful. This is one of my best purchases of the summer! Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars "A design bomb", December 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Kay Home Products 30071 Iron Hearth Portable Fire Pit & Grill (Lawn & Patio)
Bought this product at our local Lowe's store, took it home; a pain to put together. Built our first fire in it to test, after about five minutes, heard a loud popping sound! The cast iron frame had cracked right at one of the bottom screws, the crack meandered up half the bowl! Took it back to Lowe's and exchanged for another one. I always give products a second chance. Put it together again, built a test fire, in about two minutes, POP, POP. The bottom had cracked again, this time all across the entire bowl. These were not surface cracks; the entire bowl separated.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding, January 16, 2003

This piece has been passed around my nieghborhood for quite some time. Everyone who has used it wants to keep it. I love the fact that it is portable, and we have cooked on it: Lobsters, Steak, Chops, It's all great! Just be sure you understand it's more of a social gathering place than a cook top. The logs take a long time to develop the coals needed to cook, however, that's the fun!!!! We love to watch football and stir the fire, and what a fire!! Do not use on a deck, and if you love your lawn, place some bricks under the pit. We love it! I am buying one for my friend. Good luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars The Pits, January 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Kay Home Products 30071 Iron Hearth Portable Fire Pit & Grill (Lawn & Patio)
We followed assembly and use instructions and were fortunate to enjoy our Fire Pit for 1 1/2 years before it cracked where a wheel attached. My resourceful civil engineer husband made a repair using a metal bracket, which he thought would hold the thing together. We lent it to a friend for a party and were embarrassed to find that the pit cracked again, with both wheels falling off, and our friends felt terrible. I understand the rave reviews--early on--but I would be surprised if anyone has gotten more than a couple of years of use from one of these models. Considering all the other people's cracking problems, this seems to be a poor design to me.

I love outdoor fires for relaxation with friends, food and drink. This is a nice budget outdoor fire pit. I love the cast iron construction. We've had many 'raging fires' in ours but haven't tried cooking in it. To insure longevity, I purchased a cover to protect it from the elements. It's on wheels, so moving it is a breeze. I recommend it.
