Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

Kaya was the Wailers' final studio LP before 1979's Survival, arguably the album on which Bob Marley and his band reached pure pop-rock bliss (with a reggae base, natch!) via melodic tunes like "Africa Unite" and "Ride, Natty, Ride." Released in 1978, Kaya saw Marley moving more in that direction, musically, with pop melodies developing and even lead guitar piling on top of the syncopated reggae backbeats. Kaya concentrates mostly on "lighter" subjects--namely matters of the heart or just feeling good (read: screw art, let's dance)--as titles like the joyful "Easy Skanking," the beautiful "Is This Love," "Satisfy My Soul," and "Misty Morning" surely illustrate. --Bill Holdship

4.0 out of 5 stars Marley does it again, January 30, 2000
By A Customer
Kaya was Bob Marley & the Wailers best melodic album they did. For those that wanted to hear the sweeter and soulful side of reggae Kaya is the one. Although the lyrics werent as deep or political as Bob's other albums Kaya brings an approach that allot of 70's music brought but with a reggae twist. This is definately an album worth having in your reggae collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Timers should buy this album, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
The is the first album I bought of Marley's, and it's by far one of the best(next to Exodus). Discover the delights of Jah Rasta Fari and the delight of Bob Marley's musical soul. From songs such as Kaya to Easy Skanking the CD is a classic. I would also recommend Pato Banton Captured by Mad professor. if you like this you'll like Pato Banton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bob Marley Album Made, February 27, 2001
By A Customer
Although not replete with hits like the preceding album, Exodus, Kaya is the Wailer's best album, better even than Catch a Fire. It is not full of strong political messages or deep Rastafarian chants, but rather it returns to capture the beauty of free-spirited, light hearted reggae tunes. Someone looking for deep, angry lyrics might not be satisfied, but if it's great sound you're looking for, this is the album. Somehow it always gets mediocre reviews, perhaps because it does not fulfill what people who listen to reggae expect of a political group like the Wailers. However, Marley has definitely not sold out, and songs such as Easy Skanking, Sun is Shining, She's Gone, Misty Morning, Time Will Tell, and Running Away are all some of his most delightful lost classics, and deserve far more credit than they get. The title song may very well be one of his best songs ever. This album is a must for everyone who enjoys reggae, or beautiful music period.
