Book Description

For some, death may only be the beginning...

College sophomore Kayla Monroe has survived harrowing close encounters with Jack the Ripper, Elizabeth Bathory, and the devil himself. With those ordeals only weeks behind her, she is forced to weigh making a decision that could alter the course of her life forever and make it impossible to ever reclaim her place in the “normal” world she once inhabited. After a horrifying encounter with old acquaintances looking to settle a vendetta, Kayla finds herself drawn ever more deeply into the intrigues and conspiracies of the supernatural underworld. A haunted world where death may only be the beginning of an even more desperate struggle.

Praise for KAYLA AND THE DEVIL, the first book in the Kayla Monroe: Haunted World series:

"Kayla and the Devil reads like a collaboration between Richard Laymon, Neil Gaiman, and Charlaine Harris, and is as delightfully bizarre as that mash-up sounds. A wonderful female protagonist. Pitch-black humor. Jack the Ripper. Elizabeth Bathory. BUY IT!"--Brian Keene, author of The Rising and Ghoul

"Right from the very first page Bryan draws you into Kayla's world and never lets up. The pace is unrelenting with enough twists and turns to make your head spin. The ending was fabulous. Not to give anything away, but I am really looking forward to reading about Kayla again."--Famous Monsters Of Filmland

5.0 out of 5 stars Smith returns KAYLA to the UNDERWORLD! December 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am not a big fan of sequels. It is usually a book that just retreads a previous plotline with a different outcome. The main character acts the same way...does the same things...boring stuff really.

Bryan Smith goes back to his Haunted World mythos with stunning results. Kayla Monroe made a deal with the Devil....and to Elezabeth Bathory...for her soul. That all you need to know. What follows is an exploration into how someone who does that tries to counteract the deal, using her wiles.

Smith could have dumped Kayla into a scenario that was all too similar to the first book, KAYLA AND THE DEVIL. Instead he has really looked into the soul and character of Kayla and changed a few things. How can someone stay the same after what she has been (and is going) through? She can't and Smith realizes this and contemplates the reality of her actions. Alot of mystery as to what is the REAL outcome for Kayla...what does the UNDERWORLD have in store for her?

I can not wait to see what Smith conjures up next. An addicting series just got better.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book December 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I haven't read any of Bryan's books for a while now and had an opening in my reading during my lunch schedule so I started reading Kayla Undead. I have to say that I couldn't put the book down. It was an awesome read from start to finish. HIGHLY recommended to anyone who wants a good book to read if they want to read about vampires, devils, witches or just an enjoyable book. Bryan can really tell a story that is totally believable and brings you right into Kayla's world. It has been far too long between reading Bryan's books and I assure you that I wont wait so long in-between any more. I now know what I liked about his books when they first came out so long ago.

If you liked Kayla and the devil, you'll love this. Constantly twisting plot that keeps the pages turning at a furious pace. Can't wait to see what happens to Kayla next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first book March 21, 2013
I've read both of these books and I never read books back to back, so it's been a few months or a year since I read the first. I have to say this one is better. I feel the first book while aiming perhaps more for wit and shock and attitude over did things, where as this book was a more subtle romp that actually brought up some moral questions about the people in it. While the first book allowed the main character to get away without committing herself to any particular actions, this one forced her to make tough decisions and live with their consequences. There were some twists and characters you could like gave you reasons to dislike them and so on. I also like how the main character grew and matured. Though people's fascination and adoration of her for no apparent reason always kind of made me wonder why, there is also a fairly healthy dose of people whom look at her and her attitude with disdain. Ultimately I have to say I really enjoyed this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Downhill July 11, 2013
By E. Vogt
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read many books by this author and still intend on reading more. The first Kayla book was pretty good so I was happy when the second book in the series came out. After finishing the book I review by saying I was disappointed that the story started to drag on and was becoming unbelievable. It was as if the author could not figure out where he was going with the story so he habitually side tracked the main characters by putting them in bars to talk. The story could have easily been 80 to 100 pages shorter. I hope Mr. Smith takes his time in writing the third book in the series, because if the third book spirals in this continuing direction I will not be reading book 4.
