We have been using this Kaytee product, along with other Kaytee products for a number of years now. I should not though that we buy this stuff in the 40 pound bags rather than the 10 pound ones featured here. We have a rather massive and extensive wild bird feeding program on our place with a large number of feeders scattered over six acres of woodland and orchard.

The birds do seem to like this stuff and the mixture is such that it attracts a large number of species. (I have identified 35 separate species just at the feeders close to our house throughout the year. (We feed year round). This food is excellent to use in various types of feeders and the waste is quickly gobbled up by the more ground dwelling birds.

It should be noted that we also use Pennington products and pretty much go with what is on sale at the local stores at any given time. Both brands do the job. It would also be noted that due to the size of our
operation that we do some modifications. When we buy a 40 pound bag of this stuff, we also buy a 50 pound bag of `chicken' or `hen' scratch at our local feed store. A 50 pound bag of the scratch costs about nine dollars at this time. I have large metal trashcans with lids on them on our porch and we mix the scratch with the Kaytee mix. This gives us 90 pounds of food. The big difference in the commercial mix of wild bird seed and the feed store food is that the former has sunflower seeds in its mix whereas the feed store mix has no sunflower seeds and has quite a lot of ground corn. The birds do not seem to mind this one bit. While many of the traditional `song birds' do not care for the corn, the doves, both ring necked and morning, love the corn and readily take it as do the starlings and jays. This is fine with us. The squirrels (we stopped fighting that problem years ago) seem to like the corn also and I am not one to begrudge a starling or squirrel a square meal.

We do feed "our birds" black oil sunflower seeds but those are either mixed with the feed or more often than not, placed in special feeders which make it somewhat more difficult for the squirrels to get to.

I figure that by doing this mix I am cutting our bird food bill, which is considerable, down by at least 30 percent...a significant savings for us when you consider the amount we use.

Anyway, this is a good product and we will continue its use.
