Curiously compelling!, June 4, 2000
This review is from: Kazanlar Tarot (Paperback)
I bought these cards because at first glance they looked "pretty". Superficially they still do, but I find them increasingly curious, compelling and - dare I say it - confusing(but in a provocative, not puzzling, way). Names are the same as standard decks, but styles change from suit to suit... for instance, while Swords are illustrated in an Ancient Egyptian style, some of the Cups are illustrated in Eastern European folk art atyle and some in a sort of Louis Quinze style ... and Coins are like Moghul miniatures. Card names are in four languages on each card, and the whole pack presents a surprisingly unified appearance, given the different styles of illustration, owing to the clever use of a gold outer border and co-ordinating inner borders and corner decorations for each of the different suits and the Major Arkana. Each card, in addition, has relevant numbers, words, letters and atrological signs printed on it. Some cards also have printed I ching trigrams. None of these detract from the design of the cards, in fact if you don't know to look for them, you might not see them! Perhaps not the best cards for beginners, because the complexity of the artwork could distract from the significance of the card itself. I think this is a beautifully produced pack of cards which offers a lot of "acccessories" for advanced tarot readers.

Highly aesthetic, and surprisingly ethic !, February 15, 2010
This review is from: Kazanlar Tarot (Paperback)
First, the flamboyant aesthetics of this Kazanlar Tarot strikes you and induces a strong psychic link with these baroque arcana.
Second, you face quite foreign cultures : India for Wands, Hungary for Cups, Pharaonic Egypt for Swords, and Persia/Iran for Coins. Plus multicultural sparkles that make the major arcana a vast treasure of pure beauty and harmony (had ever anyone dreamed of such a soft and delicate death ?), where the perfection of the form is evidently drawn from the universal source of wisdom.
Third, you feel a bit at a loss : you have to familiarize with this totally new surroundings, scrutinizing the rich intricacy of the majors and the pleasant simplicity, almost naïvety of the minors. But they are mostly based on the folklore, and thus conveys a meaning that easily complies with your own individual approach. At that point, you understand : let flow the dream of my unconscious, or the collective unconscious, I am on the right boat under the competence of the right boatman... let's go to the other shore.
Four, you feel at home on this far away shore, and there you learn to live on unexpected discoveries : how highly ethical are these symbolic lands, how wise these people accepting serenely the hard times of the swords, how necessary and justified the bad karma to harvest by now, how lightweight and superfluous all your intellectual appraisals of the Tarot ! Some magic has operated... that is the Kazanlar experience.
