The only way I can fully describe my admiration for this shoe is with a story. My dad and I go on an annual backpacking trip near his house in Montana. We're pretty serious backpackers - sometimes doing over 30 miles in two days. This past summer I got all my stuff together and flew to Montana to go on the trip but realized the day before that I had forgot my trusty boots. I had no choice but to buy new shoes and backpack with them without breaking them in (breaking cardinal rule # 1 for backpackers). We went with the intent to "take it easy" and planned out a route of 20 miles in three days, but after the first 8 miles my feet were so happy that we extended the trip. It was some of the best packing I've ever done. And not only did I not get any blisters, but I didn't get to the campsite with a fanatical desire to take off my shoes. Since then, I purchased an extra pair of these Keen boots because they make my feet just that happy. :)

Some very cool features are: easy to waterproof - mine never leak, the little eyelits at the top keep your laces snug while you tie, feel more like sneakers than boots, adequate ankle support, VERY light (VERY important after twenty miles of hiking!) and good tread. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS SHOE, October 26, 2008

I don't think i could ever settle for another shoe. It's the most comfortable shoe I've worn. It has great tred on the bottom for a great grip. It's waterproof so I can tromp around in shallow creeks. Plus, Keen's leathers are all machine washable! It makes for great clean up. Take the footbed out, throw it in the washing machine... just don't throw them in the dryer (can't imagine the heat would be good for the sole.) Great shoe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Boots!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Keen Women's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot (Apparel)
I wore them for the first time during a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton and they were GREAT! I took an extra pair of sneaks with me because I feared I'd have problems because I hadn't worn the boots before. I also had blister bandages. I didn't need any of them!! These boots survived very wet snow, many muddy, flooded paths and Bison Poop! They were so comfy I thought I had replaced the arches with something 'better". I felt very confident on rocky paths. I had to buy 1/2 size bigger then my normal size.

Many of the more expensive boots hurt my feet and/or ankle so I am super pleased with these boots. (though not so pleased about my encounter with the Bison ;) )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but order very large!, June 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Keen Women's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot (Apparel)
I just bought these, and while I thought I ordered them large enough, I realize I need to go up 1 1/2 or 2 sizes from my normal shoe size, not just a half or one size.
Also, when they first arrive the toe area feels very tight. The padding will expand vertically if you walk around in them a while.

The monument/iguana color is darker than it appears in the picture. The lime green is not bright, it's a "muddy" lime, actually pretty and muted, and more natural looking or "tactical" as my husband would say.

The arch in these boots is very high and gives a firmer support than I expected. Like walking on clouds. I can't wait to try them with my pack.

I have an old pair of low cut Keen Targhees that are the most comfortable hiking shoes I've ever owned, but no longer waterproof. So I ordered a new pair in the mid height model. After my first walk, my toes are wet from the dew on mown grass. It galls me to have to pay for the shipping to return defective shoes to [...]. If you don't care about waterproof, Keen sells similar non-waterproof boots that cost less than the Targhees. If you do decide to buy them, remember they do run at least a size smaller than your other shoes (even other Keens). Given the waterproof problem and size oddities, I suggest buying them locally where you can try them on and take them back for free when they leak or don't fit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not waterproof, December 29, 2008

I bought this shoe in men's sizes so maybe the problem isn't applicable to the same shoes in women's sizes, but I'm warning potential customers anyway. I'm especially disheartened by Keen's lack of good customer service when I contacted them.

I've been wearing these boots in the snow and mud. The front ends (toe ends) of the shoes are wet inside after walking in the snow for several miles. I don't agree with the Keen website that says, "The shoe is revamped with the KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane to keep your feet dry and comfortable" nor do I agree with the amazon.com description above that there is a "waterproof barrier". These boots are not waterproof. (My previous boots had Goretex lining and they were waterproof.)

I bought a bigger size than usual. From the Keen website: "As a general rule, go up 1/2 size from your standard shoe size then work from there..." My feet tend to be a bit wide, so I bought men's shoes. They fit well and are comfortable. I love the roomy toe area.

One other criticism is the laces come untied easily. I have to double-knot them (not unusual, but worth mentioning).

Although Keen offers a one year warranty on these boots and the lining is printed with "guaranteed waterproof", I contacted Keen and they were not very receptive to dealing with the problem. The boots today are still wet inside from two days ago. I regret buying these shoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfy and sturdy, January 7, 2010
This review is from: Keen Women's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot (Apparel)
These boots are amazingly comfortable. I've owned them for over a year, and try to plan as many hiking trips as possible just so I can wear them. I've also worn them around town a lot this winter because they are waterproof and have great tread, which has helped with the enormous amount of ice that has been lingering on the ground for the last month...I have dipped them in some mountain streams and through muddy trails and my feet have stayed dry throughout. They (I think?) are also made with Keen's e-vent fabric or something to make them breathable as well as waterproof, and it works great- my feet don't get ridiculously sweaty, but sometimes when I'm out in cold, dry weather, my toes start to get cold (a frequent occurrence for me in most shoes).
I have some Dr. Scholl's insoles in my boots, which helps a lot with the comfort, but I never used the insoles that came with these boots (I bought them slightly used...:)). Mine are 1/2 size larger than my regular shoes size, which accommodates thick hiking socks easily. I occasionally get some heel-rubbing, and on my last hike was certain I would have blisters, but to my great relief, no blisters! I think I just need to add a liner, as my wool hiking socks are stretching out. I also have wide feet, and there's plenty of room in this boot for my feet, with no slipping and sliding around in the boot. The low-cut curve on the heel was a little strange to get used to at first, and for the first couple of hikes rubbed a little on the back of my leg, but I've gotten used to it and it's no longer irritating.
The boot overall feels really secure, has great ankle support (field tested!), is waterproof and breathable, and just really, really comfortable. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great boot!, August 17, 2009

I've searched long and hard for a comfortable hiking boot, and I've finally found it! I like this boot so much that I bought two pairs in two different sizes. I normally wear a size 8.5 shoe, so based on many reviews saying that these boots run small, I bought a size 9. They fit very well, and are very comfortable, but I live in Alaska and I was pretty sure that if/when I ever needed a heavy sock, they'd feel too small. So I bought another pair in size 9.5, and I love them too! All I need to do is lace the 9.5 pair a little tighter, and they feel great. They're not too long. If anything, the 9 may be a tiny bit short in comparison, but not enough to be a problem in most situations. The size 9.5 fits very comfortably without insoles or heavy-weight socks, but if/when I want or need either of these additions, they'll accommodate them very well. In fact, if I go on a long-distance hike with a 30-lb. pack, I'm quite sure I'll choose to wear the larger size. My feet do seem to get warm in these boots, but I'm so pleased with the comfort and support of this relatively light-weight boot, that for me, it's not a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars great!!!, August 26, 2008
I only wore these hiking boots a few times. I took them for big time hikes in the mountains of Vermont. They passed with flying colors. My feet were dry. My feet did not hurt after climbing steep paths, walking in mud, water day after day. I wholeheartedly endorse these Keens!

5.0 out of 5 stars trekking comfort, March 24, 2010

These Targhees are nearly perfect. I trekked with them for 16 hours sometimes in mud up to my knees up and over the continental divide in Costa Rica. They kept water out unless I walked through rivers that ran above the top of the shoe. My ankle was sprained before this trip, but the Targhees had enough room for an ankle brace and thick wool socks. The arch support is pretty good.
