Temporary and eternal... well, mostly eternal,
By Rahsaka "Bern" (LRSY, F) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Keep (Audio CD)
Although looking at the names of the songs you could think this is a compilation, it is not. Happy performs concerts in livingrooms of particulars, and this album tries to render that kind of atmosphere. As a result, it has less bvs and when it does, it is from another singer who is good at it.
Also, it is less electronic than the albums, emphasizing on Happy's gorgeous voice and lyrics. But it gives a new perspective on those songs. And there is a beautiful meddley mixing songs of Yes and Kate Bush that is worth listening to. I still don't know why there is not much recognition for this artist. I believe this may be because she chose to be herself instead of fitting in commercial standards. But this particular album is almost like a spiritual experience. It is you with the artist, both alone together in the performance. And if you get what is inside her words and chant, then you are just uplifted and transported to some other place where rating something is meaningless. I wished the last album came out soon... But I prefer it to be right on its time.

Something to come back to,
This review is from: The Keep (Audio CD)
I listen to a wide variety of music from Enya to Rise Against to Beethoven to Eminem. However, my mind changes about most them as much as does my taste for different genres but I am amazed at how much I love not just this album, but Happy Rhodes as well. Her music is beyond beautiful and compelling. In my personal opinion this is her best work. A truly amazing collection of songs.

If I'm ever asked which one album I'd take with me to a desert island -- this would have to be it.

The keep is a recording taken from Happy's intimate live living room conert series. I only recently came across happy rhodes on youtube accidentally while looking at David Bowie videos she popped up in the related recomendations. I clicked on her cover of space odditty and wow I was freaked out by her insane vocal range. I kept clicking on everything I could find then went to amazon to try and find somethigng to purchase. The voice eminating from this pretty young womans pipe has got to run the gambitt from baritone to saprano and all pointes inbetween. when she goes low you would swear it's a man singing. It is as if she has two totally different singers living inside her at the same time. Her arrangments on the covers she does are among the most unique and intresting I've ever heard.I don't know why she has not been picked up by a major lable. But it is probably a good thing they would just ruin her like they do with every truely unique artist. I do wish that more of her cover material was available on cd. But her originals are quite nice as well. I have seen comparisons made to David Bowie and Tori Amos. I supose these are fair comparisons but happy is no carbon copy of anyone I have ever heard. I'm sure I'm not telling anyone who has heard this amazing artist anything they don't already know. But for those of you who have'nt and are ready for a new and refreshing musical trip. I highly recomend you take a ride down Happy Rhodes.
