5.0 out of 5 stars A must for those worried about diabetes
Diabetes is more than just having to watch one's blood sugar - it can leave you crippled. "Keep the Legs You Stand On" is a warning manual about a danger of diabetes not often talked about, the risk of amputation of one's legs. Doctor Mark Hinkes offers advice and tips for preventing diabetes before it starts, as well as recommendations on what to do if one has already...

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful information, but flawed approach
The author doesn't spend enough time talking about the importance of keeping blood-sugar numbers normal in order to avoid foot complications. That is the single most important thing that a diabetic can do, but it isn't discussed in detail in this book. Instead, the author talks about the various treatments for foot ailments, and spends a lot of time promoting his...

This review is from: Keep the Legs You Stand On (Paperback)
The author doesn't spend enough time talking about the importance of keeping blood-sugar numbers normal in order to avoid foot complications. That is the single most important thing that a diabetic can do, but it isn't discussed in detail in this book. Instead, the author talks about the various treatments for foot ailments, and spends a lot of time promoting his profession of podiatry. If your blood-sugar numbers are normal and you are still having problems with your feet, then the information in this book is invaluable. But if you have neuropathy in your feet from out-of-control blood sugar numbers, then you'll be better served by a book about type-2 diabetes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference on foot care., June 24, 2009
This review is from: Keep the Legs You Stand On (Paperback)
Dr. Hinkes Book "Keep the Legs You Stand On" is the finest source of information for keeping your lower extremities in sound and proper working order that one could hope for. The title is so meaningful for me as I have already lost one of them.
Having lived with Diabetes and Charcot Joint (foot) for several years, I only wish I had learned earlier what Dr. Hinkes has taught me recently. My left foot collapsed with this disease five years ago resulting in a below the knee amputation.
The good doctor is treating me now for a similar condition with my right foot. Recurring diabetic foot ulcers have plagued me for several years. This condition is covered thoroughly in this book explaining explicitly how to detect and treat, and when to seek help from a physician.
As I understand, the book was originally intended for professionals, but expanded so as to be understood by the layperson. Very, very important information. If you are having foot problems, don't put it off! Buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A diabetes blogger loves it too, April 1, 2009
This review is from: Keep the Legs You Stand On (Paperback)
With our epidemic of obesity, and thence of diabetes, such a book is clearly a valuable addition to the literature. This book will save legs. It could be a fine gift for a close friend with diabetes, presuming they read. I found it because of a blog posting by David Mendosa, a respected blogger on diabetes related matters at Health Central. He seems to agree with me.

One way to cure foot sores before they create the risk of a need to amputate is to use Microcyn Wound Care which is also available here from an Amazon Marketplace vendor.
