Book Description

No teacher has ever appreciated Jackie's excessive enthusiasm, until Ms. Sugarman. When Ms. Sugarman leaves the fourth grade to become principal, Jackie is devastated. "The honest and caring relationship between [Jackie] and Ms. Sugarman is one that every student and teacher might envy. Solid characterizations, with good insight into the difference an understanding teacher can make." —SLJ. "A funny, heartwarming story with a very real little girl at it heart. Any student who has ever idolized a wonderful teacher will sympathize with Jackie." —ALA Booklist

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Jackie, a notorious tomboy, is a self-proclaimed "teacher's nightmare." But in fourth grade her image changes when Ms. Sugarman, a gifted teacher, discovers the girl's talent for writing poetry. Jackie is soon given "teacher's pet" status and it's a heady feeling--she enjoys school, a first for her. But the sky falls when Ms. Sugarman is suddenly appointed principal. Drastic measures are called for, and a frantic Jackie is not above using them. The prolific Levy ( Dracula Is a Pain in the Neck ) writes in tribute to a former teacher (named Sugarman) and conveys skillfully the impact good teaching has on students. The dialogue is often trite, however, and Jackie's frequent disrespectfulness toward her elders is an unattractive flaw. Some New Testament references bring a slightly religious tone to the story, yet it's an easy read that effectively illustrates teacher-pupil attachments. Ages 8-11.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- After her first three years of school during which her excessive enthusiasm has not been appreciated or understood, Jackie finally has a teacher who likes her for who she is. But there are two problems: one is her father, who wants her to be a better student and more athletic; the other is Ms. Sugarman herself, who leaves the classroom to become interim principal when the position suddenly becomes vacant. Jackie faces these situations with humor and sometimes misplaced energy. She learns that although she cannot change her world, she is indeed an ``original spirit'' and finds the self-confidence to move on. The honest and caring relationship between the girl and Ms. Sugarman is one that every student and teacher might envy. Solid characterizations, with typical fourth graders and good insight into the difference an understanding teacher can make. --Carolyn Jenks, formerly at Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, NH

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Keep Ms. Sugarman in the Fourth Grade (Paperback)
The book Keep Ms Sugarman in the Fourth Grade by Elizabeth Levy is about a girl and a teacher. What I liked most about this book was Jackie tided herself to the table. There was nothing I didn't like. I recommend this book to other kids.
