Consistent Excellence, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Keep Searchin (Audio CD)
I put off buying this album when I read a bad review in DownBeat, but after hearing it, I'm more convinced than ever to let my subscription to DownBeat expire. What I like about Steve Turre is that his work is consistently excellent. He has worked with a variety of performers and explored a range of styles (sometimes on the same album), and Keep Searchin' is no exception. But no matter what style he plays or who he works with, the result is polished, innovative and energetic.
On this disk, Stefon Harris is excellent as usual, and Turre (again, as usual) gives his guests plenty of room to stretch out. And don't be put off by the presence of Turre's wife, Akua Dixon, on baritone violin on several tracks. Turre's talents as an arranger show through especially on those tracks, as he integrates the two baritone voices beautifully.
The originals by Turre and Harris are all noteworthy, but for comparison purposes, I'll mention track 6, My Funny Valentine. This is the best version of this song since Gary Burton in 1962.
