Burning Ballads, Blues, Soul and Latin on 3 horns,

This review is from: Keep the Spirits Singing (Audio CD)
The world lost a great jazzman when David Newman died in January of this year. His last record was reviewed favorably, but for me, you could tell he was ill. This album is a different story altogether. To the Latin touch on the title cut, to the burning, burning alto featured on "Willow Weap For Me," through the nice mix of ballads and funk and D. Newman's ever-present vocalizing on flute, this album merits five stars all the way. Steve Turre guests on three tracks. Every one of his late career albums contain so many different feels from track to track. Giant Texas Tenor! You just can't go wrong!
