This review is from: Keep Them Freaks a Rollin: Live at Abbey Road (Audio CD)
A live in the studio performance,...a true rarity, though not unlike alot of the BBC recordings...like the 'John Peel' radio show. Or even 'King Biscuit' live performances released through the 90s and on. The sound is pristine, indeed the single 'Out Demons Out' is a 4:48 edit. of the 9:55 unedited version on this disc. Three of these songs are 'works in progress' that appear on their '70 &'71 albums. All of these songs are loose versions, elongated with a lot of banter primarily from Edgar...theres humor and dark humor, especially 'American Boy Soldier' where he talks about the 'little yellow people' and having half of a leg shot off, amongst other twisted scenes in all their greusome realness. I dont think even 'Beefheart' or 'Zappa' could go here and still be funny. Somehow Edgar and Arthur make me smile every time I hear, (Hi Kid)...(Hello Sir)...This will always be my favorite 'Broughton Band' song...aquired autumn 1988 via 'The Harvest Story' comp. album...I had never heard of this band before, and to this day have never seen a vinyl album! It's no wonder why nobody in the U.S. has heard of them...they've been 'black-balled'! Probably one of J Edgars' Hoover-Menuevers! He didn't like people with a 'J' in their names,...maybe he didn't like 'Edgars' either! (pun intended) It took 13 years before a freind found 'Oora' in a cut-out bin in 2001...but the timing was perfect. If you think wars are faught to line rich peoples pockets and you think the government sucks and you wanna' hear someone who tells it like it is whlie making you laugh,...I can think of no more compitant recording artist. A fine piece of nostaliga to dust off on occasion and a good insight into this living legend. Wish I could cross the 'pond' for a look-see....Oh Ya! Their DVD "ROCKS"!
