Editorial Reviews

Six AM: that's when society vamp Valerie Parks rolls home after a glamorous night out. Six AM: that's when Pvt. Valerie Parks gets up to hut two three four in olive drab and sensible shoes. Lana Turner stars in a breezy comedy about an heiress who must prove her maturity to gain her inheritance, so she hatches an immature plan: join the WACs, fake some gravitas and quit as soon as she gets her manicured hands on the dough. Happily, Uncle Sam and World War II combine to help a spoiled little rich girl grow up.
Co-starring a platoon of bright Hollywood femmes, Keep Your Powder Dry is as snappy as a recruit's salute but its comedy is tinged with heartbreak. After all, there was a war on - and war has consequences.

Really, I have nothing bad to say about the movie.

The movie is great, but you may have trouble finding a machine that will play it.

A great story with a lot of humor and some fun cat fights between the ladies.

I don't know why some movies are heralded and others are passed over, but "Keep Your Powder Dry" deserves more than it's gotten. The cast is superb, as is the writing, and it's a really interesting peek into what it was like to become a WAC. Lana Turner isn't her usual femme fatale here; I very much enjoyed seeing the character change for the better. Really, I have nothing bad to say about the movie.

I have one beef with the disc, though--not every player will read it. With a standard blu-ray it seems to be fine, but with some DVD players it's a bit touch and go. Real shame, too, because a movie like this is meant to be shared.

I have to admit I didn't know much about Lana Turner until one day I watched her in Madame X. From that moment on I was hooked. She was truly a powerhouse on screen and so I had to see more of her on film. Keep Your Powder dry is a younger Lana Turner as a socialite who joins the WAK to prove to herself and others that she has what it takes. A great story with a lot of humor and some fun cat fights between the ladies. If you love Lana turner you will definitely like this movie. The woman had grace, style, and beauty and in Keep Your Powder Dry she is in uniform......

Keep Your Powder Dry is a WWII drama with comedic moments centering on the relationships between three young women who join the Women's Army Corps (WAC). It was released in April, 1945 is extremely well-acted and well-written. It could easily have served as effective recruitment propaganda for the WAC if it had only been released a few years earlier.

A gorgeous, society vamp in her early 20's, Valerie Parks (Lana Turner, age 24, and utterly stunning) is burning the proverbial candle at both ends, staying out until sunrise at ritzy night clubs, drinking herself into a daily hangover. She's fussed over--and lived off of--by her best friend Harriet Corwin (Natalie Schafer, age 40 and looking every bit as young as the 25-year-old character she is playing, is best known for her role as Mrs. Lovey Howell on the TV series, Gilligan's Island). Valerie is due to inherit $365,000 (the equivalent in today's dollars of over $10 million), but an entire board of stodgy bankers were appointed in her father's will to oversee her trust fund, and they won't sign over control of her inheritance to her because they think she is too immature to handle that much money. While lamenting her situation to her attorney, Valerie reels off a series of joking suggestions as to what extreme actions she would presumably be expected to take to win the approval of the bankers, including the possibility of becoming a WAC. To her shock, her attorney leaps on that idea and strongly urges her to actually do it. Broke, desperate, and spurred on by Harriet, who doesn't want her rich friend's gravy train to end, Valerie decides to enlist, stay just long enough to wring her money out of the trustees, and then quit.

I got this video to see the scenery at Ft Oglethorpe. My mother was stationed there and I was hoping to see what it looked like. I expected more local post scenes and was disappointed.
