A Hook-Filled Album of Power-Pop Songs, March 2, 2009

I'd actually rate this 4.5 stars. A few tracks towards the middle of the album that drag a little would be the only thing keeping me from giving it the full 5. Having said that, this album was the album I wish the All-American Rejects would have released this year. It rocks out quite often, including the impressive opening track, "Serpent Queen Part II." Another track, "The Night," resonates with strong hooks - very reminiscent to Yellowcard's "Light Up the Sky," with a bit more energy. When the band slows it down a little ("Lay With Me") they pull it off because the lead vocalist can sing very high without being nasal or annoying, and the hooks are solid and in place.
This album is more steady and consistent than thair previous set from a few years ago, titled "Always and Never." While the former album was a bit more "punk" in vein of the Ramones or The Living End, this new set is more enjoyable throughout. The production is great, and the vocals have dramatically improved, and the band attacks each song with passionate performances. In the end, only a few songs miss the mark, making the album more than just a quick listen. The songs stay with you long after you hear them....and the lyrics can be both haunting and inquisitive. High praise indeed, for this young up-and-coming band. The sky appears to be the limit for these guys.
