This review is from: Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm (Audio CD)
The first impression one has of Keep Your Soul is that Doug Sham was really much greater than most people outside of Central Texas realize. The CD includes covers of some of Sahm's best known songs and biggest hits by an allstar list that includes Los Lobos, Alejandro Escovedo, Dave Alvin, Delbert McClinton and Jimmy Vaughn. All of these performers do honor to the songs, but I always found myself thinking, Doug's version was much better and more soulful. My favorites on this disc are Flaco Jimenez doing the little known Ta Bueno Compadre, The Gourds' version of Nuevo Laredo, and the sentimental close, where Doug's son Shawn does a marvelous job of replicating his father's voice and style on the hit Mendocino. This is a fine album and I think it will have done its job if it makes you want to go back and seek out the original versions by Doug himself.
