Coulda Been Better -- But Great Exclusive!, March 28, 2009
This review is from: Keep Your Soul: A Tribute To Doug Sahm [AMAZON EXCLUSIVE VERSION] (Audio CD)
It is surprising that so many of the artists on this album simply did not seem to have their hearts in the songs that Doug sang so much more strongly than they. Almost throwaways by some. It's hard to do badly by "Mendocino" and "She's About a Mover" and Shawn and Little Willie G. come through with fairly strong renditions of these, and my old secretary (!) Freda sounds good on "Be Real" while Flaco is always Flaco ... but the real treasure is Track 15 on this special Amazon version! "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again" by Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles has great energy, fresh sound and does the song proud. Doug would surely have liked this, while the same can't be said of too many of these versions. Still, an album worth having on its own, and this Exclusive Version one, that for a change, makes an Exclusive worth having.

Put a `W' under the win column for this Doug Sahm Tribute, "Keep Your Soul", June 28, 2009
This review is from: Keep Your Soul: A Tribute To Doug Sahm [AMAZON EXCLUSIVE VERSION] (Audio CD)
This is absolutely one of the most brilliant compilation tribute records I have heard in a very long time. You can tell by listening to it, every single artist involved is truly a fan of Sir Doug.
The record starts out with Little Willie G, performing to perfection, Sir Doug's first hit with The Sir Douglas Quintet, 'She's About a Mover'. He somehow adds his own flair to the song while staying true to how the song was meant to be played, with that traditional 2/4 Tex-Mex beat we Doug Sahm fans have grown so accustomed too over the last four or so decades.
The very next tune on the record is 'And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down' from The Sir Douglas Quintet record, 'Mendocino'. The song is eloquently performed by none other than Los Lobos. We are introduced to the song with saxophones luring us into the beautiful voice of singer, Cesar Rosas. It's another absolutely true rendition of the original tune released back in 1966. Performed by Los Lobos it could have very well been a brand new song.
'Why Why Why' is not only one of my all time favorite Doug Sahm songs, it's probably one of my all time favorite songs-period. When you have Jimmie Vaughn not only lending his unique guitar playing style, but also his amazing voice as well-Damn-you just hit a grand slam as far as I'm concerned! Absolutely an amazing version of this already down in the low-down song.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better Charlie Sexton and the Mystic Knights of the Sea far exceeds my thinking by performing 'Your Doing It To Hard'. What can I say about the performance of this song? Nothing. Just listen to it. It is one rockin' rendition of an already rockin' song. Charlie Sexton's gravely voice only adds to this hard rock song. It is what groovin' is truly all about.
To start wrapping things up who should we have other than Sir Doug's off-spring, Shawn Sahm, performing `Medocino'? He stays exactly true to his Father's song. Hell, if I didn't know better, I'd say it was the senior Mr. Sahm performing. The junior Sahm's version of this song is an absolute hats off salute to his Father's honor and talent for his contributions to Rock `N Roll music. I believe I had tear swell up in the corner of my eye while listening to it.
I bought the Amazon.com version of the tribute record which had the bonus track, performed with a Texas Country twist by Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles. I loved it and you can tell she did too. She pours her heart and soul into her version of this great song that was originally recorded by Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet in 1966, again from the Medocino record.
I made a reference to baseball earlier in this record and I'm going to do it again. This is a definitely a `W' in the win column as far as I'm concerned. Just about every batter that comes to the plate, gets a hit and there are several home runs along with a couple of Grand Slams via Jimmie Vaughn and Charlie Sexton.
`Rebel' Rod says to definitely check it out!

groovers respect, May 5, 2009
This review is from: Keep Your Soul: A Tribute To Doug Sahm [AMAZON EXCLUSIVE VERSION] (Audio CD)
As far as "tribute albums" go this is right up there with the best of them. Okay, none of the tracks are as good as when Wayne Douglass originally did them (in whatever guise or set up he was in) himself, but you have just some of the cream of Texas musicians covering just some of the all time great Sahm classics. To my ears this is an absolute joy of an album and has been addd to my Doug Sahm "Playlist" on my I-Pod so that I can hear both the originals and these respectful covers on shuffle. The one and only "Sir Doug", gone to his Groovers Paradise in the sky, but clearly not forgotten.
