Book Description

December 1, 2004
The third title in the John Latymer mystery series Recovering from a bad bout of flu and the humiliating failure of his second marriage, former policeman John Latymer is feeling distinctly low. When a regular customer of the bookshop in which he is now a partner suggests that Latymer make use of his holiday cottage in Cornwall, John takes little persuading. He could do with the break. But the cottage fails to live up to expectations, and Latymer's mood is not improved by the news that a TV crew will be filming nearby. Apparently Keeper's Tump, a legendary prehistoric barrow said to be guarded by the mysterious Keeper, is to be the subject of a televised archaeological dig. Latymer's professional curiosity is aroused, however, when a dead body is found at the entrance of the burrow, and the local museum curator goes missing . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Policeman John Latymer, on holiday in Cornwall to recover from the break-up of his marriage, arrives at his rented cottage to discover a television crew filming an archaeology series at Keeper's Tump, a prehistoric burial mound located on the property. When the crew makes the grisly discovery of a decomposing body just inside the mound, they race to Latymer's cottage to call the police. At first, Latymer is only marginally interested in the goings-on, but when a local museum curator who seems to know more than he's telling suddenly disappears, Latymer dons his amateur detective's hat, somewhat to the chagrin of the local police force, and dives into a case that involves stolen antiquities and a local legend about the "keeper" of Keeper's Tump. Cook's third entry in this police procedural series is engaging and entertaining, with an inventive plot and a hero whose charms are growing with every outing. Although readers may guess the identity of the villain well before the conclusion, that doesn't detract from this mystery's appeal. Emily Melton
