Just when you thought hip-hop was ‘dead’ and good projects are extinct, Brooklyn’s Shabaam Sahdeeq throws a vicious uppercut and smacks you silly with his ‘Keepers of the Lost Art’ lp. He earned a lot of his early stripes alongside Rawkus Records and released lots of material with amazing emcees, such as Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, Redman, Busta Rhymes, Smoke Dza, Reks, and Skyzoo. Shabaam is also notable for being a member of Polyrhythm Addicts – an amazing group that was slightly under the mainstream radar in the late 90′s alongside Mr Complex, Dj Spinna and (originally) Apani B. His early material really offers that raw, east coast, boom-bap style of rhyming at a time when the New York scene was much more competitive.

Over a dozen projects later (ranging from compilation projects, official drops, and mixtapes) Shabaam Sahdeeq returns with ‘Keepers of the Lost Art’ for all the real hip-hop fans. The title alone holds a lot of weight, and is a very bold statement. Shabaam absolutely offers you proof on this project that he is in fact loaded with the artillery to contribute to the dying art of hip-hop. It is very true. He is the keeper of all the rawness, the true essence of this art form, and what the game needs more of.

With over 20 tracks and a wide range of content throughout, Shabaam really had his heart in this project. “…My stripes attack, got the whole world on my back, bring it back to that raw show these creeps how to rap…” (U Don’t Want None ft. General DV). One of many lines that qualify Shabaam as the realness in 2014, not to mention the grimy, street, hypnotizing hook that was rewound many times and mildly addicting. The substantial number of tracks was a success in this case.

This is a really good album. Great lyrics and good beats. Been listening to SS since the 90's and he still got it. Pick this album up if you want that NY hip hop.
