2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't keep my interest, November 1, 2007

From the back cover:

A reason to celebrate...

When Katie "Smith" and her baby son, Kyle, appeared at the Owens family home one night during a snowstorm only weeks before Christmas, it seemed a bizarre twist of fate. Katie looked exactly like Jacob Owens's dead wife; Kyle could have been his son.

At first Jacob wanted nothing to do with the mysterious woman at Holly Ridge. But before long, Katie accomplised what no one thought possible: She broke through his grief and gave him back his joy in living.

But how long would she stay? Katie was obviously running away from someone, though she wouldn't say who. Jacob vowed to keep her and Kyle safe with him--at least until Christmas.

And my review:

I will admit, I came into reading this not really expecting to like it. I've tried to read books by Marisa Carroll before and have never been able to finish them. One problem might be that Marisa Carroll is actually a pen name for two people writing as one. With very few exceptions, I don't usually find compilation books to my taste. They often just don't flow well.

That was unfortunately the case here. The words did not flow. I wasn't getting drawn into the story. In fact, I had to keep forcing my attention back to the book. I'd get to the end of a page only to realize I didn't remember a thing I'd read. This got worse by the second chapter, when multiple characters (the hero's elderly aunts) are introduced all at once. I had a difficult time keeping them all straight, especially since they all acted practically the same. I think one or two quirky endearing aunts would have been sufficient. Five seemed a bit much.

The "woman on the run falls in love" plot is an old one, and I think it's been done better. Not recommended by this reader.
