Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Meryen, a small Cornish copper-mining town, is on the cusp of change in 1838, while Amy, a carpenter's daughter; poor, hard-working Sarah; and heiress Tara become secret friends in spite of their class differences. Tara is forced to marry her social equal, Joshua, who is disinterested in his young wife as he pursues a clandestine existence. Sarah catches the eye of the lecherous head of the secretive Kevil clan, Titus, who is known for his cruelty. Amy is heartbroken when her brother Toby dies and takes out her frustraion on Titus' son, who works in her father's shop. The Kevil family is trying to become part of the town rather than remain a separate and mysterious clan, while Tara wants her family to become more involved with Meryen as well. This is the first in a planned series about Meryen, which, judging by Cook's intriguing first installment, promises to be a riveting historical saga filled with secrets, love, and lust.
