Book Description

October 1, 1999 9 and up4 and up
Sixteen-year-old Hannah describes the events that lead her family from their home near Dead Sea to the fortress at Masada, where a group of Jews hold out against the Romans for seven years.

Torah Aura Productions publishes books for Jewish schools and families that help celebrate our heritage and our faith.

We have over 25 years of experience as the leading creator of high quality educational materials that enable Jewish children to become empowered Jewish adults.

Our books guide and enhance the Jewish knowledge, spirituality and identity of children and their families, and our innovative tools bring Judaism alive in synagogues, Hebrew schools, and day schools.

Torah Aura Productions was founded in 1981 by a group of innovative Jewish educators who looked out at the field of Jewish education and found materials that were shallow and dull. They started a company to create new tools for families and teachers that would be exciting and meaningful. For more than two decades, Torah Aura has revolutionized the way Jewish schools enable their students to become empowered Jewish adults, and has helped families make Judaism a meaningful presence in their homes.

Some of the areas we publish in:
- Torah and Bible
- Talmud
- Jewish teaching
- Jewish parenting
- Jewish ethics and values
- Jewish holidays
- the Jewish lifecycle
- Israel
- Hebrew
- Jewish prayer

Torah Aura Productions: Making success in Jewish education an achievable reality.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Masada was a refuge for Jews escaping Roman persecution. After a prolonged siege in 72 C.E., over 960 Jewish men, women, and children decided to kill themselves rather than become prisoners. Currently, it is considered an Israeli symbol of courage. Unfortunately, the drama, excitement, and pathos of the original event are not transmitted through this novel. The story is told through 16-year-old Hannah's loosely constructed diary, but the author steps outside the constraints of the format to editorialize and proselytize. The portraits of the teen and her family are poorly drawn and lack any depth of character. The tragedies they suffer leave readers uninvolved and untouched. The writing is uneven and uses vocabulary inconsistent with the speaker. Erik Haugaard's The Rider and His Horse (Houghton, 1968; o.p.) and Sophie Greenspan's Masada Will Not Fall Again (Jewish Publication Society, 1973; o.p.) adequately treat the same subject matter.

From the Author

As I watched my daughter Julie prepare to become a bat mitzvah at age 13, I found myself fascinated with the prayers, rituals, teachings and Hebrew language about which I knew precious little. At age 41, compelled to find a vital "missing link" to who I was as a Jew, I began adult bat mitzvah classes at our synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel (West Hartford, CT).

There I discovered five other women pursuing the very same search. Together we studied, questioned, learned prayerbook Hebrew and did a lot of handholding. On June 16, 1995, our efforts culminated in our magical moment on the bima as b'nai mitzvah. Completing Keeping Faith in the Dust during this time was an indescribable joy for me; the sweetest of milestones marking my continual journey of the spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping Faith in the Dust, June 30, 2000

Steven M.Friedman (Roslyn Heights, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Keeping Faith in the Dust (Paperback)
This intense, ficitionalized account of the siege of Masada has all the makings of a major work and will take the reader through their entire emotional spectrum. The degree of drama, suspense, and action contained in this 68 page short story belies its size. The author has captured the very essense of the human spirit and its driving need for freedom - no matter what the price. Although intended as a book for young adults, I was totaly captivated by the story's plot and the writer's style. I highly recommend "Keeping Faith in the Dust" to all who seek inspiration in an exciting and heart rendering story. Thank you, Francine Maltz
